Katie Scarlette Terry Zweig

I was raised by two extremely creative parents in rural Arkansas. They helped influence the way I see and experience the world. I studied Landscape Architecture at the University of Arkansas, and after college I moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to pursue a career as a Landscape Architect. I moved once again to Boston to start my own family and to study painting. These transplanting experiences have caused abrupt changes in my everyday life and my goals as an artist. My past experience as a graphic designer and Landscape architect sometimes translates graphically through my Painting. The changes can be seen in my art as I borrow images from those chunks of time and use them as environments in my pictoral spaces. Superimposing people in to these contexts allows the mixing up of time and place. I take with me these experiences and will continue to use them as I make art.

Since 1993, I have made portraits of myself, which are not self-portraits. I am trying to make other people recognize something beyond my image. I give information about my personality through staged portraits. In my first works, I was was representing my simple image. A more recent series contains much larger color paintings that re-stage the settings of various earlier images into my current surroundings.

My endeavor has yielded multiple drawings and paintings
in which I investigate issues about the construction of self-image and offer narratives to the viewer. These images include landscapes and interior spaces in which I feel comfortable. The subject matter that is interesting to me relates directly to my favorite things in life. Family, food, cats and color are the subjects that I rely on for inspiration. The choice of who, what, and where is based on the point that I am trying to convey in each piece. I would like for the viewer to either read my simple narratives or create one in their own mind as they experience the piece. While laughter is sometimes a goal of mine, simple contemplation is appreciated.

Afer moving back to Fayetteville, Arkansas, I started Zweighaus. It is a studio where I create and teach others. I am starting with children and will add some adult classes after this summer. I am really enjoying sharing my knowledge with others. Is is a great experience.
