On the Nature of Things is a public artwork for Dublin created by Katie Holten as part of Dublin Contemporary 2011.

Texts are written on the streets of the city center with hand-painted ceramic tiles. The source for the text is a found copy of On The Nature of Things, by the Epicurean poet Lucretius. Although written c. 50 B.C., the poem persuasively lays out a strikingly modern understanding of the world. Every page reflects a core scientific vision - a vision of atoms randomly moving in an infinite universe – imbued with a poet’s sense of wonder.

Dublin Contemporary 2011 is Ireland's International Art Exhibition featuring over 100 Irish and international artists.

Katie Holten is a visual artist. In 2003 she represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale. She has had solo museum exhibitions at The Hugh Lane in Dublin, The Bronx Museum in New York, Nevada Museum of Art in Reno and Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.

Lucretius was a poet who lived in Rome about 2,000 years ago. Click here to listen to Robert Krulwich discuss On the Nature of Things with Stephen Greenblatt.

Nicholas Mosse Pottery was established by Nicholas Mosse in 1976 in Kilkenny, Ireland. They produce hand crafted, functional pottery in the style of Irish Spongeware, the traditional pottery of Ireland used in the 18th Century.
