Working In An Ever Changing Medium
Since we first went into business in 1986, Pacific Art & Light has been as diversified as the land and life of Southern California. In those days we were primarily creating visual effects solutions for national television spots. We worked closely with directors, often at the bidding stage, to find the key to cinematically conveying the concept through live action techniques. Digital rig removal was not an option then, and the effects we pulled off were realtime magic tricks recorded in-camera. Soon we were also being called upon to work with top commercial still photographers, creating custom props and rigs. The high concept images that resulted carried the messages of leading national brands to both the trade and retail markets.
At the same time, we were involved in design for print, using the traditional pre-digital techniques of stat camera, darkroom, pen and knife. As the computer became the tool of choice for print design, we replaced the drafting arm with a Mac, sitting right on top of our drafting table. By the mid nineties, the desktop video revolution and the desktop publishing method merged on the Mac, and over the years, as computing power multiplied, so did the options for artists like ourselves.
As we have evolved as artists, our company has remained our creative sandbox, where clients’ needs are met with open minds and the full tool box of every technique and technology we have known in our over twenty years of visual design problem solving. Today, we partner with designers, art directors, photographers and directors in the creation of a shot. We fabricate props and rigs, work on set, and finish the high resolution image. We can even plan, produce, and direct the entire shoot, live action or still, and deliver the finished element as a turnkey service. It all starts with the meeting of the minds, and the earlier the better.
