Page : EG0514 Title: Evolution 14

If we want to understand why we are behaving the way we are we will not be primarily concerned with the biology of genetic inheritance, but with the particular case of the evolution of human behavior and, specifically, social behavior. We have, as a species, not made significant physiological changes in the last 50- or 100-thousand years, but we have made radical changes in culture. It is the evolution of culture that is significant in understanding ourselves.

It is often said that we cannot use the notion of evolution in this case (except as a weak literary metaphor) because evolution only applies to things that are genetically determined. That appears to give us the choice of accepting the notion that behavior is genetically determined or abandoning the concept of evolution as applied to behavior.

We have another choice.
