As the school year comes to a close, we will be wrapping up with a unit on poetry. During this unit we will learn about different types of figurative language that poets use, such as metaphors and personification. We have some fun projects in store as well. Additionally, each student will choose a poet to focus on, and complete an in-depth study of that poet and his/her work. Let's get started!

What you should be working on: (All three assignments are due by the end of the day on Tuesday, June 3rd)

1. Poet Study/Flipbook:

Step 1: Read the biography and poetry (online and in class) of the poet you have chosen.
Step 2: Look for examples of various devices (simile, metaphor, etc.) in his/her poems.
Step 3: Create your flipbook by following the instructions posted (In Class & Homework pages)

2. Poetry T-Shirt:
Step 1: Find a poem you like (a lot). ☺
Choose two lines from any poem that you find funny, amazing, inspiring, meaningful, etc.
You may not use song lyrics.
The poem, with two lines highlighted, and the poet’s name are due on Tuesday, June 3rd.
Step 2: Get a white t-shirt.
The t-shirt should be washed without fabric softener or dryer sheets.
It does not have to be a new shirt, but it has to be completely plain (no logos, pictures, etc.).
The t-shirt is due by the end of the day on Tuesday, June 3rd.
Step 3: Design an image for your t-shirt.
Sketch your design on a piece of white paper and turn it in for approval.
In class, paint your design onto your t-shirt.
Step 4: Wear the t-shirt all day on Poetry Celebration Day. (Bonus points!)

3. Poetry Anthology
We will be creating a poetry anthology (a collection of poems) of student work. Every student is to contribute.

Step 1: Write some poetry.
Complete the poetry writing prompts/exercises in class.
You may also write poetry outside of class!
Be creative, not nervous! Put your thoughts on paper, and worry about how it sounds later.
Step 2: Choose your best poem.
Workshop your poem in class.
Edit and revise your poem as necessary, until you are satisfied with the finished product.
Step 3: Submit your poem.
Your poem should be typed, 12-pt. font, Times New Roman, or neatly hand-written in black ink.
You may also submit an illustration to accompany your
poem.
Your poem (and illustration, if included) should fit on one
piece of paper.
