| Some notes on Panasonic NV-GS400 in live shooting | | Date Created: Aug 16, 2004, 11:48 AM |
It's been about three weeks since I got the NV-GS400 and shot under various situations and most importantly, shooting live music performance is one of the key event for us.
We went to shoot Koto's live performance at Tokyo Tower on Aug. 11th.. We took three GS400s and one DSR-PDX10 on Vinten tripod. The performance was held from 19:00pm and they turn down the lights in the room really low for the night view of Tokyo. The stage didn't even have dedicated lighting, just few small spot lights.
NV-GS400 not having slower shutter speed than 1/60 was not much problem this time, by adding the gain around +15 gave us enough brightness on the stage.
First problem I ran into was the zoom. The zoom rocker does not initiate soon enough nor smooth enough, so that I was having problem to start zooming smoothly and slowly. normally I would not have this problems with this cam under live music performance because I have more time deciding what to do, but the zoom rocker on GS400 does not start smoothly (maybe "play" is too much), most of the time, I had to move the zoom rocker quite a long time to start zooming gradually, but then I missed the zoom timing often.
The automatic audio gain control did not work good for live performace. I WAS, too close to the PA speaker, but the auto gain control bends too much of the audio fidelity, so under this kind of situation, I would recommend to sound check thoroughly, and manually set up the gain.
I will post the video clips later at Koto's homepage. |
