OK - let's assume that you are either frustrated looking for a traditional J.O.B. or for whatever reason feel it is time to work for yourself and realize your dream. Ah, the heady wine of freedom! Rewarding, exciting, fantastic... with a few minor drawbacks (for example, you don't get paychecks anymore). But once you try this, you may never want a job again. Not for everyone, although one statistic states that about 20% of American workers already are freelancers.

Needless to say the safest way to start is to throttle this up while working a nice, safe job. And needless to say a whole lot of nice, safe jobs are not so safe anymore. So if you are out looking, why not consider figuring out what you would love to do... really love to do... and going after it. You only live once. Do Not Waste Your Life!!!!

Here are a few good starters, and needless to say this is not just for techies and geeks...

Spare Room Tycoon is an excellent book about freelancing, and the author James Chan has a great web site:

PANMA, the Philadelphia Area New Media Association, is a group of consultants, freelancers, students and others who share a mutual interest in web design and the "new media". They have a web site and a lively email discussion group. They meet frequently for social and networking events as well as for technical seminars.

The National Speakers Association is an excellent resource for you if you are a professional public speaker, or if you are involved with public speaking in your profession. They are also a great networking opportunity for vendors who offer products or services of value to speakers. There is a local Mid-Atlantic chapter of NSA that meets in Conshohocken. Check the national web site and inquire about the local organization. This organization is not to be confused with Toastmasters, which is essentially for people who wish to learn public speaking. NSA is an organization for people who are professional speakers, and for vendors who support their efforts. Check this out! The folks are professional, friendly and helpful:
