Andreas in Uppsala, Sweden, September till December 1999

As most of you know, I spend a few months this Fall in Sweden. Typically I said "in Stockholm", although this is not exactly true. I work at the Swedish Institute for Computer Science (SICS), which has it's main offices in Kista, which is a suburb of Stockholm. However they have a smaller office in Uppsala, which is about 60km (40m) north of Stockholm, in the old capital of Sweden. And Uppsala is the location where I spend most of my time. I do go to Stockholm -- oops -- Kista roughly once a week.

Uppsala is a small town with a big university and this shows well in the life style here. As you can more or less walk everywhere, and as it's pretty flat too, bicycles are everywhere. Well, bikes are everywhere in Scandinavia anyway, it seems (I could confirm that at a recent trip to Copenhagen, Denmark), but in Uppsala there are even more bikes than usual. I don't think there is anybody over 3 years in Uppsala, who doesn't have a bike.

When I arrived here, Fall typically should have started for real, but I was extremely lucky: we have an especially warm Fall this year and day-time temperatures often go over 20 deg C, which is at least 5-10 degrees warmer than it should be at this time of year. Of course I don't complain and enjoy the sunshine and a few extra warm days to ride my bike around.

Below are a couple of images to show you what it looks like here. You will see a change in color as the time changes from late summer, over full into winter.

Enjoy!

Here are a few snapshots of the place where I live. This one shows the kitchen. It looks so well organized because I didn't have adequate time yet to trash the place.
To the right of the kitchen is this area with access to a little balcony. This is where I typically eat and work, because it's the best table in the place and had the best light too.
The same thing as seen from the entrance to the apartment. If you walk left (behind these wooden grates) you get to the kitchen. If you walk right...
...you come to the actual living room.
Here is what you would see from the window side.
This one doesn't look especially exciting. It's essentially an empty room with a bed in it.

The entire place looks so empty because the person who normally lives here is on an extended visit in the US and obviously brought a lot of stuff to the States. Or maybe he just sold it to get money for the trip.

That's what the building looks like from the outside. You see that a LOT of people ride bikes here. You see bike racks like this practically everywhere in Uppsala, but this apartment complex might be especially bike-infested, because it's all student housing.
Yup... bikes whereever you look...
...and in a bike centered culture like this you find certain amenities that are pretty rare in -- say -- Atlanta. This is one of the many bike pumps that exist practically everywhere in the complex. Isn't that nice? Never need to think of your bike pump just in case you discover your tire lost some air over night.
