A short visit to San Diego, CA, November 2000

In early November 2000 I traveled to San Diego for a couple of days to attend the ACM UIST 2000 conference (Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology). Good conference!

Here are a couple of pictures from this trip. It's not much because I didn't have much time to sightsee, with the conference going on. Downtown San Diego has some very interesting modern (and not so modern) architecture. The big thing to see in San Diego is of course the Zoo in Balboa Park. Unfortunately I had only a bit over an hour there so there is not that much to see of either the Zoo or Balboa Park.

These pictures were done with my 35mm pocket camera because my Nikon Coolpix quite suddenly passed away. It's being repaired as I type this (I hope)

The plaza on the other side of the street from my hotel. I stayed in the historic US Grant Hotel. Very nice.

Turn right and you see this - the hotel itself. Recently renovated.

Lobby of the Grant hotel

this space intentionally left blank ;)

The Mall across the street. Interesting architecture. Reminds me of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari...

...yup. Definitely Dr. Caligari

They also like to post funky signs there. Note the can of Guava juice, pondering possible legal consequences of leaving with me...

Talking of signs... this one is at the Zoo. Now can somebody email me a definition of "bullyrag", please?

The Gorillas at the Zoo. They built a very nice area for them.

The same from a different perspective. I tell you, with these new Nike shoes you can jump REALLY high!

Downtown San Diego... Old and New right next to each other.

The YMCA where I tried (in vain) to go for a swim. I was always too tired (in the morning) or they were closed (in the evening).

Yes, I know, these photos appear tilted. Looks really strange, but I'm too lazy to photoshop them into submission.

Old and New next to each other also here. To the left is the SantaFe Rail station. To the right the tram station.

Have a closer look at the tram station. Very appropriate architecture for something that's right next to the museum of contemporary art.

One of the railway station towers.

Inside, the waiting hall has some very nice tilework on the walls (and very uncomfortable chairs).
