Hartwell to St.Simons Island, June 16-23, 2001
This map shows the approximate routes of the 5 BRAGs I've done. This last one is shown in pink, the others in blue. This shows that there is still a log of Georgia that I haven't seen yet... Our route this year was:
|
Of course the entire trip is longer. I arrived in Hartwell on Saturday already and Sunday the 24th was my travel day back to Atlanta where I should have caught a plane to San Jose (which I didn't, unfortunately).
The photos below are scattered impressions from BRAG. They are in no reasonable order whatever -- they are sorted by file name, which is entirely useless, of course. But you should be able to figure out that the boats probably belong towards St.Simon's Island and that all the nice houses in Washington were probably photographed on Sunday or Monday.
BRAG isn't BRAG without Chris Cakes. It's hard to describe. Imagine getting your pancakes launched at you at the time in the morning where you didn't have your coffee yet (you won't get coffee till you got past the pancakes). It's a trip. You have to experience it at least once on BRAG. Actually, this year it was possible to - erm - cheat. We had a second provider of coffee: Cafe Campesino. So you could get your caffeine first thing in the morning which would enable you to catch the pancakes later.
Note the photo of Jerry. Right now he's probably wishing he had run away when I came along with the camera. Gee... two beers at once!! Jerry, jerry,...
Heavy's Barbecue is a real gem. First it's located right next to a very nice lake, which happens to have a coke-eating shark in it. It also has a showcase of old farming equipment and, last but not least, they have an old coke delivery truck! The only downside: they were closed when we got there.
About the prison cemetery: We rode by the GA state prison where a number of inmates were watching us through the fence. I guess the bike ride is a major event for them as there is not much else happening in these places all year. Shortly after the prison we rode by the prison cemetery. Note the numbers on the crosses, but the lack of names!
Quick notes: The Silver Fox had his 81st birthday on the day this photo was taken! The bike box was how I transported my bike to GA. The boats on shelves is definitely one of the weirdest things I've ever seen. I wonder what happens in a major storm?
There is much more to tell, but I just don't have the time to write it all up. So if you have questions, send email!
