MAYA*SHIGERU*MAKOTO

The junior grade officers of NERV are absolutely vital to the smooth functioning of HQ. Maya Ibuki, Shigeru Aoba, and Makoto Hyuga work under extreme pressure and usually obey orders without a second thought -- even when the orders are particularly brutal.

When the End comes, the junior grade officers have no idea what Instrumentality is all about. They speculate that when the Angels are gone, what will happen to them. They believed NERV would be disbanded and that their usefulness would end when the Instrumentality project started.

Maya: "If Commander Ikari hadn't made that decision everyone could
have been killed!"
Shinji: "I said that's not the point!! My father
tried to kill Touji using my hands! That bastard."
Ikari: "Increase the pressure of the LCL to maximum. We have no time
to waste on a petulant child."

kaji hits on maya.Maya is Dr. Ritsuko Akagi's immediate subordinate. She wants to be like her senpai. She is about as innocent as anyone in the cast. Despite being younger, Asuka is far more world-savvy; Shinji is actually bolder with a stronger will than she; and Rei probably doesn't know she exists.

She is however an expert with the computer. She is in love with Ritsuko, but it is more the infatuation of a young admirer. She just barely resists Kaji's play for her. If not for Misato's intervention, Kaji would definitely have kissed her.

shigeru plays the air guitar.Fuyutsuki: "This doesn't give us a clear enough image."
Shigeru: "But, according to the Asamayama Research Institute on earth quake, we should take a closer look at this shadow."
Fuyutsuki: "Indeed, we can't ignore it."
Ritsuko: "How did the Magi judge it?"
Maya: "Fifty Fifty."
Fuyutsuki: "Is someone there yet?"
Shigeru: "Captain Katsuragi is already on site."

Shigeru is the other tall, good-looking, long-haired guy in operations. He plays the guitar and the air-guitar when he's not yelling out what's going wrong with the EVAs or the computers. Unlike Maya and Makoto, he's somewhat cynical about life in Tokyo-3. He is also trained in firearms and is willing to use them.

Researcher: "That's the limit!"
Misato: "Go ahead. 500 more."
Operator: "Depth 1200. Pressure-resistant armor is cracking."
Researcher: "Katsuragi-san!"
Misato: "If it breaks, we'll pay for it. 200 more please."
makoto reads a manga.Makoto: "We're monitoring the reaction!"
Misato: "Start analysis."
Makoto: "Right."
Operator: "The Probe has imploded due to the extreme pressure."
Misato: "How is the analysis?"
Makoto: "The pattern is blue!"
Misato: "Then there's no doubt. It's an Angel. From now on, this lab is completely sealed off. It is now under NERV's control. All access to the outside is prohibited. All the records of the events of last 6 hours are classified."

Makoto is the manga-reading, overly serious bespectacled one. He's enamored of Misato and goes through much to get to the truth beneath the lies, just for her. He would in fact give his life for her.
