Jet is the owner of the Bebop, which is rather like the fishing boat a retired cop would buy to get a little peace from the wicked world around him.
That's right, Jet was a space cop, or more exactly, he was an inspector for the Inter Solar Systems Police, or I.S.S.P. He used to be called the Black Dog, because he was tenacious in hunting down the perpetrators and seeing them pay for their crimes. He was very good at his job and well respected.
In fact, he was too good. His friend and partner betrayed him. But he didn't die, despite massive wounds. Instead, he was saved with new technology. Now he has a metal cybernetic arm and obvious bits of metal in his face and parts of his body.
But he's not bitter. He is resigned to his destiny. And he has resigned from the force. Now he's a bounty hunter, doing the same job, but with less restrictions. Not that he would ever break his own code of honor and ethics -- he leaves that to his new, younger partners, Spike Spiegel and Faye Valentine.
Jet was once in love.
But he was too upright, straightforward, and perfect for her to bear. Back on Ganymede, Jet was in love with Alisa. Alisa loved him well enough, but she was tired of him always being right, of him always knowing what was best. So she left him a one-word note "Sayonara" and a pocket watch.
Now she's in a bad relationship with a young guy, who habitually makes all the wrong decisions. Jet's over the love affair, but it took seven years.
Spike and Jet sit at the Loser Bar. Spike says nothing. Jet laments.
"Sheesh. That was the first time we screwed up so badly. We never had anything like that before when we were all alone. All told, they screwed up our plans right to the end. They really were like troublesome babies. I completely understand why you hate women and kids now."He has a hard time trusting women these days. Though he cares about Faye is a brotherly way, he is constantly reminding her that she owes them money for staying on the ship. This is the lonely hearts' cruise ship if ever there was one. He invited Spike to join him three years ago, because he thought Spike could use a friend -- which was exactly why Spike joined him.
Jet: "Even if you come back, there won't be a place for you here."
Spike: Can't do anything about that. I'm sure you're not as lonely now that you have some more strange roommates."
Jet: "Me? You stayed here just for that reason? Stupid! It's been three years since I teamed up with you, but I never knew you looked at me that way! I was under the impression that you were the lonely one!"
Spike: "Well, we cleared up that misunderstanding."But when Spike is preparing to leave the Bebop, he calls up Faye and asks her to look after Jet. And in a way, Spike sets Jet to looking after Faye.
Jet is a master ship mechanic. He keeps the Bebop, Swordfish II, Hammerhead, and the Redtail working along with finding jobs for the crew.
