"I've never had anything good happen to me when I trust others."
Faye Valentine was born half a century ago. She had many friends and was a cheerleader. But she was gravely wounded in an accident while traveling in space, so badly inhure that she could not be cured within her own time. She was placed in cold-sleep after the accident so that she would be awakened at at time when doctors could help her.
Unfortunately she was awakened by a charlatan doctor who wanted to cash in on the huge amount of debt saddled on her during her sleep. She was saved by a man who wanted to collect the debt for his insurance company. Older, but still young and naive, she fell in love with him.
Wronged, she became a different person.
Renewing the title of "Poker Alice", Faye took up gambling to cancel her debt. She failed when she tangled with Spike Spiegel, a man whose right eye is cybernetic and can see beyond what the natural eye sees. Having missed her chance to clear her debt, she joined on with the crew members of the Bebop. Though she is hardly openly welcome.
Faye: "I'm alone. I don't want comrades and it's not worth having any. I end up worrying about things I don't have to, you know, cause I'm such a good woman. All the guys end up fighting for me. They often say that humans can't live alone. But you can live pretty long by yourself. Instead of feeling alone in a group, it's better to be alone in your solitude."
One person who did welcome her into his life was Grencia Mars Elijah Guo Eckener. Gren is the tall, long-haired, handsome saxophone player she met in the city of Blue Crow on Callisto. Gren protected her from the men who took great interest in her -- as Blue Crow is a city of only men. And he protected her from herself when she thought to go after Vicious and take some revenge for her last encounter with him.
But he also plays into her idea that when she trusts someone she is betrayed. Not that Gren betrayed her, he simply kept her out of the fray. But Faye saw him as an acquaintance of Vicious and in that she saw betrayal.
Despite herself, Faye still has a heart -- though it's kind of prickly. And right now, Faye shows herself to be more in love with the black jack table or the betting at the horse races than she is with any man.
She suffers from an acute fear of caring for others. She doesn't want to become dependent on anyone or have people need to rely on her. So, if she just keeps her distance, if she connives and cheats them, then she doesn't have to worry about anyone but herself.
Too bad for her that she's on the Bebop. People who starve together, who get attacked by a refrigerator fungus together, who munch on hallucinogenic mushrooms together, tend to care about each other.
Faye is an excellent bounty hunter, because she is cold and calculating. She can turn off her emotions in regard to love and hate, but she cannot turn off her reckless nature. She is an excellent markswoman with a gun or with artillery attached to the Red Tail. She can also take on the throng with her hand-to-hand technique. When she was feeling depressed on Callisto she wanted the excitement of fighting a bunch of perverts who were following her.
Faye: "Hold on a minute. I don't want to chip a nail."
She is a gambler by design since her awakening. She plays the horses, the dogs, and dices with Jet Black for money and clothes. She cheats. But she doesn't play such games with Spike. He can see right through her.
But he cannot see her heart. If he could, he would know that she is in love with him.
When Julia, Spike's true love, meets her, she knows immediately. There is a kind of stand off between the two women, both acknowledge the fact that to love Spike is to have no hope in that love.
Jet: "Oh man. We're not a repair ship. Don't come back here just when you break something."
Faye: "Where is he?"
Jet: "He?"
Faye: "The one with the fluffy hair."
Jet rubs his bald head.
Jet: "What! Can't you just say you're looking for Spike?"When she goes back to Earth and touches her past, she decides that it is too far from her to take. She decides to stay with the Bebop. Before leaving to find Julia, Spike asks her to keep Jet from being lonely.
