Over the years, many people have written to me about the site, about anime and manga, about promoting Japanese culture, and about their lives. Although I haven't always written back, I have always keep you all in mind when I started scratches out things for the site overhaul -- which isn't an overhaul so much as a bit of CSS and some duct tape.

I must admit to not knowing how to answer all your questions. That being said, I've created another place for tossing out those questions and maybe finding some answers at Enjoy Refreshing Time, where I hope you will stump my truly expert friend Ggreg. Also, another great place to ask an expert is at Animenation's Ask John column -- he really knows his anime.

The # 1 most deeply discussed topic over all the years has been my take on Who Killed Kaji. And I just want to commend all the people who have disagreed with me and let me know it. Hey, the free market of idea exists for anime, too!

So please, keep watching anime, reading manga, and thinking about everything you digest intellectually.

I look forward to encountering you again in the wired.

Want to ask me, Grevas, or Ggreg something
or just want to comment on our comments?

Hello

My name's Phill, and I happened to stumble on to your site while looking for pictures of Kaji. I write you this letter due to the fact that I was utmost impressed with the phillosophical sediment you incorporated into your site. NGE, Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, all of what I read was utmost impressive. Quite frankly I also write, to ask if you would like someone to further talk about this sort of stuff with. Phillosophy, Symbolism and what-not.I haven't really found content of this calibur in sometime, and would like to further talk about it if you have the time. I'll leave you my screenames and what-not if yo'ud like. Thanks for the time, and nice site. Impressive :)

Misato did NOT kill Kaji. The official word from Gainex is "none of the main characters killed Kaji" Anno said that himself

Hello Otaku Central,

I checked out your website and wanted to reach out to you about a new JPOP band I’m currently promoting on the BENTEN label.  They’re called the Titan Go Kings.  Based on your affinity for anime, I thought you might enjoy their new anime music video entitled “A Volume of Titan Go King’s”.  You can check out their website, anime video and listen to some MP3’s of their music here:  http://www.sister.co.jp/Titan/index_e.html

Currently I’m working to create online awareness for the Titan Go King’s and their anime music video, and I’d love for you to help me by posting a link on your website to their site containing that video.  In exchange for your help, I can offer you a sample CD of the Titan Go King’s music and a DVD of the video. If you are able to post a feature story on them or give top placement on your site to them, we may be able to supply you with additional promotional items from the record label.

Please make the link to the band’s official website:  http://www.sister.co.jp/Titan/index_e.html

If you place the link on your site, please email me your mailing address so I can immediately send you the sample CD and DVD.

If you have any questions about the band, you can email me at cstone@digiknow.com

I appreciate your help in promoting the Titan Go Kings.

Have a nice day,

I was browsing the web when I stumbled into your site and saw that image you have of rogue and remy in bed. I've seen the pic once or twice before, and have been trying to work out which issue of which comic its from since I first saw it.
I thought it came from x-treme x-men, from the art, but I can't seem to work out which issue.

I never thought that a simple (at first glance) otaku site would be able to catch my fancy...

...but yours did.

The start for me was similar to yours, but i wasn't able to dive into the world of true deep impacting shows like Evangelion at first, no...it all began for me with Pokemon. Sad i know, but i was younger and watched it before school. I looked into it, and alas, the word ANIME popped up a lot more than normal in my informational sites, and i looked it up. It was pretty funny going to school and telling all my freinds, (who by the way were not even remotely interested in anything I said that had to pertain to animation), that pokemon was actually JAPANESE (gasp) and a type of art called anime. They patted my back, said "that's nice" and walked away from me then, but i didn't let that bring me down, no, i looked more into this japanese style, and became in love with the different geanres, characters, and types of humor that they had to offer. I began to find the inner meaning to certain stories, and then...i came across Evangelion.

My father knew that i was into mangas as well as just Anime, and he brought home Neon Genesis Evangelion for me to try one day. At that time he had just said, "I saw a japanese kid on the cover, he looked like those things you watched on t.v so I grabbed it, have fun." I was pretty surprised to see it was considered the most controversial series when i read the back. I had read the first issue and hadn't seen anything that intense. I began buying more and more issues, then i went crazy and bought the whole box set dvd series. Then i bought both movies. I did a bad thing then, i watched both movies before finishing the whole series. That was a really interesting day. I don't think i turned off my DVD player for 30 minutes before i came out of my trance like state. I wasn't able to comprehend the whole meaning of what had just ocurred. That same day i finished watching the whole series, then i rewatched the movie, End of Evangelion. I was able to put together my own hypothesis if what happened, but nothing as in depth as your site brought to my attention. You reintroduced aspects of the show that i hadn't even stored into my mind. It was amazing what you brought out of the storyline, and i wanted to talk to you more about it. I, being only a mere 17 years old (as you could probably tell), need a little help in understanding all parts of the show.

What you said was completely true.

I Loved the ending...

...but i threw the dvd case at the T.V and cried too. (yes, i actually cried, i couldnt hold my emotions in like you. What are you going to do, eh?)

If you could e-mail me back, i would LOVE to have discussion with you, a fellow Otaku. I really just started getting in depth into Anime, and a master like you would trully help me into being a real fan, a true lover.

I have to go now and watch Trigun. ( It sounds sad sometimes, but when i tell it to a anime lover like you, it makes sense that i need to go for that, don't you think?)

Your Devoted site lover,

Elizabeth

P.S. ... I loved your site.

I read you Evangelion part, you explained everything to me, i was so happy.

Before i realized i didn't understand half of the things you said.

I am only 17, and big explanations and wonderful examples don't come to me as quickly as more mature smart people.

E-mail me and help me out.

Hello.

I wanted to let you know that your website Otaku Central is the best website I have found for information on the Neon Genesis Evangelion series. I just finished watching for the first time the Evangelion Movie "End of Evangelion." I searched for a site to clear up some information about the movie and your website came through.

I like your take on the the whole Misato killing Kaji angle. I wondered why nobody in the series wondered or investigated Kaji's death?

Thanks again for making a wonderful informative site.

John

dear 'otaku'
I read your ever informative site about the Evangelion anime series. You did a commendable job in interpreting the hidden meanings behind the solemn tale. I agree with most of your views and also feel that END OF EVANGELION is the most artistic anime movie of all time. However, i cant help but feel indignant when i read the column explaining why Shinji was chosen in the END to witness the end of the world. You said that he pilots to get praise for he has a low self-esteem and that he has no self-pride.I disagree, if you recall, in episode 19, Shinji leaves his 'job' due to some emotional problem and comes back because he is the only hope against the Angel. He comes back not to get praise from his scumbag father. He comes back to save the ones he love. It is easy to say that Shinji wallows in self-pity and has other negative qualities. But one has to give him some allowance for he is only a 'parentless' neurotic 14 year old kid that has come face-to-face with death and loss. Shinji is a true hero, at least in some episodes, he is courageous even though he is a victim of a force he cannot control. Unlike other superficial modern day heroes, Shinji, in episode 19, shows us that a person's choice can save others one holds dear. Please take whatever i have written into consideration and update the part titled 'Why Shinji' in your evangelion page which contains the general information.
Shinji : " I thought this was a world without pain and uncertainty"
Rei : " You thought that everyone thought the same as you"
(taken from end of evangelion before the "song" starts)
Shinji is just misunderstood.

I'd like to make a suggestion if you dont mind...

In your Evangelion section, when you are explaining why the angels try to contact adam you wrote "They seek him because they must, not because they wish to. They are not evolved in their intelligence."

It might be better to explain this not in terms of intelligence but in terms of free will. You could say that the angels lack free will, so they have no power over their decisions and are more or less slaves of adam.

P.S.- I really appreciate your site, especially the EVA section and if youd ever want to discuss eva theories feel free to email me. Thanks for your time.

Hey. Just to tell you that i followed and agreed with your end of evangelion article word for word. You managed to write down what i was feeling when i first watched it, well done!

The site rules. I've only really used the nge section but that's big enough to be its own site anyway. It's been really useful in solving the conflicts in my mind! lol.

Only thing is that otaku literally means a sad person that stays at home and doesn't have a life. At least that is the original japanese meaning of the word. I accept the american useage of it now... we don't even have words like that in england, lol.

Yours confusedly

We just read your review of Gasaraki and it was great! One question tomo-who or what is or was Gasaraki or Gasar? Kugutsu were the Gowa clan and kugai were the TAs in feudal japan and the kais were the mystics who controlled the kugais however it all smacks of shinto mysticism and is quite complex. Any further explanations would be greatly appreciated. Arigato. Ja Mata-Keiman and Kei. BY the way we just saw Ep 24 last night and cannot see 25 and 26 til next month on Anime Network. Again great site ya got. Hope to visit again soon!-K&K

Hey, for the Masterful Mademoiselles part of your website, just so you know: the early 1600's was known as the sengoku era. It was japan's feudal age when all the shoguns were feuding with each other over land. Nobunaga was a general who lead the people together to unite the country. He was killed, but his underlings finished the job for him =)

It was just you specified all the Kenshin ladies as being from the meiji era, so I thought you'd just like to know.

Useless history lesson brought to you by. . .

“The Lance, rather like the lance that pierced Jesus' side, bleeds this fluid.”
Well, if you were Catholic you would probably know that the Lance of Longinus IS the lance that pierced Jesus’ side. And That it has the power to make a person ruler of the world and the power to destroy a soul. It is rumored that Hitler gained position of it just be for WWII, and lost it just after D-Day…It is also supposed to be in the alter of the, at St. Peters Cathedral in the Vatican.

And you tree of life link goes to Shiji.

Just so comments no need to go out of you way.

No, what I meant was that since you specified which era the Rurouni Kenshin gals were from, you might want to know which era Ninja Scroll took place in, and that's the sengoku era.

Sorry if I confused you.

Hello,
I just finished reading through your Eva shrine, and I must say... it is by far the finest dedication to Evangelion that I've ever come across in any form. It's a profound and exceptionally well conceived guide for a show that works on so many levels... i've wanted something to help sort out Eva in my mind for a long time. so, i very much appreciate all the work you put into this. kudos to you! now i'll have to check out your other shrines.

Hello. ^_^v
My name is Nina and I recently discovered Witchblade. While doing a research on google about it, I found your website. And that´s because I´m emailing you.
I really liked your website! The way you resumed Ian´s history and all is great, not to mention your selections of images.
I had never saw that one in which Sara kisses Ian, I was so thrilled when I saw it, you can´t imagine it! I really like them together.  ^_^;;
Ian became very fast one of my favourite comic characters, along side Rogue, Gambit, Constantine, Delirium.
I was happy to see that you like both comics and manga. Most people don´t. I like both of them, equally. They are so different that I can´t say that I like one over the other, it would be unfair.
Fushigi Yuugi is definetely one of my favourite manga! XD Chichiri is one of my all time favourite manga character, along side Shampoo, Vicious, Folken, Faye Valentine, Juri from Utena. XD~
I hope you get to read this email, since the last update on your website was on 2002. I´m not sure if you use the same email account.
Anyway, that was what I wanted to say.
Once again, congratulations on your website. ^_~v
Hugs,
Nina

Thank you so much ^^

Anyway.. I don’t even know how I stumbled onto your site today.. Was searching for random stuff and did a google image search for sakabatou, and found your sakabatou.png image, which somehow led me to reading your site.  I really dig the history pre kenshin.. Greetings,

Just a quick to say thanks for your site.
It's rather refreshing to find a site that's stylish, yet easy to read, with well balanced layout and comments.

(minor niggle - there may be a few pictures on the following page which don't match the links:
http://homepage.mac.com/jubei1/cowbe/cowbeverse/cowbeuniverse.html)

Why I visited:

Having just finished watching the excellent Cowboy Bebop series I was hunting for some related, quality fan-fiction. No such luck! Nearly everything is along the lines of "more sex!" or "my life as a crew member". Certainly nothing which I could say was in character with the series.

So I've started on my own, to tie up one or two ends from the series. I figured it couldn't be any worse that some of the existing stuff. Problem is that the people who've seen the first bit all said they wanted more.
Which is flattering, but a bother, because I've had to do heaps of extra research attempting to get the details right for an extended version. Character motives, psychology, history, medical (apparently lesions of the right anterior temporal lobe can cause retrograde amnesia, fancy that), etc., and those really annoying little details from the series that can blow your story out of the water. Argh!

Which brings me back to the point...
That is to say thanks for the well rounded insights on the Bebop crew.

From these I've realised that Faye, in particular, often drives a scene. Also she has a lot of hidden (suppressed/frustrated?) femininity and almost pleading at times to belong as a woman with a woman's needs, not just as a crew member or etc..
Does that make sense, or am I missing the boat here?

I've also gone back through to strip detail down to just enough to give the idea to the reader, so they fill in the blanks themselves (sort of like the punchline of a joke -- the listener making the connection is what makes it funny). I suppose that adds suspense and enjoyment, too.

Cheers,
- Andrew.

Dear, otaku central

To introduce myself, you can call me Lin. For secure purpose I don't really want to give you my U.S. name. I figured your site is probably ditched, but I watched NG-Eva(Neon Genesis Evangelion, if you're lost with this abbrieviation). I read your review of the end of Evangelion, I just wanted to say I felt the same way...you fav. was kaji right? Well, for me it was Asuka...seems typical =P. I kinda felt a bond as well and I just didn't want her to die. Not like that though... Otaku central was a site i found on google if you wanted to know. I would really like to talk to you more about NG-Eva or if possible, each other.

From, "Lin"
P.S. Write back if you can, but i'd understand if you lost interest. It has been well over a year since your site was updated. Plus the thought of writing to a stranger, ^_^...Also if you know anything about a sequel or more to NG-Eva after the "end of Evangelion". Thanks(Ari Gato)

Heh...Came across your website...was surfing the web...being bored like usual...i don't even know why I'm telling you this...^_^.

Well, your site is really good. It gives, like soooo much information on anime and all. I'm a Chinese GIRL that is also an anime fan. Let's wonder why I'm emphasizing the "girl" in the previous sentence. I'll just tell you. It's due to some misunderstandings after seeing my nickname as 'Jo'. I never put my real name so most assume I'm a boy. >_< Hate it...

Well, I'd greatly appreciate it if you replied back...^_^. I get annoyed when people don't reply to my e-mails. I'ts annoying. I hope you understand.
Anyway, keep up with the site and all! It was REALLY good. ~_^

Sincerely,

Hey.  I've got a question.  Now I'm sort of over evangelion, but you seem to know a lot about the show.  What is so different about the way that unit 01 was created besides Unit 02 or 00.  Why couldn't they use one of the other two in the end of evangelion?  Answer back soon.

Hey Hey Hey.
At 9:15 PM I been searching though web vast world of the web site and stumble in to your web site. I was more or less shocked by the way you describe anima. I felt that way because I think the same way about it. Anime is something that let our fantasy fly it let our mind free of the burden of the real world. Just like "The World" in anime hack//sign. I just wanted to say that I like your web site and you done pretty good job. You know the first anime that I seen was Roboteh. I was finished by it. Wow this is something that might or might not come true. Hehhee. The bad thing is that they never showed end of it. I was watching it in Belarus that where I'm from.
The worst thing about anima in USA is that they don't really show it even if they do they cut so much out of it that there is nothing to see. In USA we are limited by what is shown in channels like CartoonNetwork and Action (Friday Anime section). I watch
watch them all to see to let my imagination fly in Japanese animation. I notes that by watching anime looking in to life of fantasy I think more about my own life to see is there something that make me special. You might ask is there. I don't really know. I think not many people actually know. You see I star from telling you that I like your web site and end up talking about myself. heheheh. I hope that we will become friend and share our expenses with anime. I really like that, not many people are really see what is the point of anime and what must be seen. Some people see only surfers of what is show....
I hope I did not bored you with all this stuff. :)

~ :) may your fantasy fly for ever :) ~

Death and Rebirth, released by Manga entertainment wasn't really that good, was it? What was your opinion on Death and Rebirth, seeing as how it was mostly a rehash and then the first 30 minutes of The End of Evangelion?

____________

Thank you very much.  That information was very helpful.  Shortly after I received your email I was surfing the net and happened upon a site that sold the uncut subtitled OAV's for reasonable prices!  Thanks alot for that information, it helped greatly!
~Michelle

Hello.

Sorry to get back to you so late -- and early in the morning -- but in order to answer your request I'm having to watch everything again. For a quick and dirty answer all the info on his background can be found in the OAVs Samurai X Trust & Betrayal. Also between episodes 40 and 43 you can find that info when Kenshin is reunited with his master Seijuro Hiko. Most of the episodes leading up to the battle near Kyoto have bits and pieces of Kenshin's past as Hitokiri Battousai.

If this answer is good enough let me know, otherwise, I'll get back to watching the episodes for you -- and me ;-)

Hello.

Firstly, let me say I love your site.  I was searching for a background on Kenshin Himura and your site told me all I needed to know and then some!

So I was wondering I you could help me.  I was wondering what episodes have Kenshin's past in them.  You know, were he is sold to a slave trader, his full past.  Where can I get those?  In addition, do you have any pictures of young Kenshin?  I want to write a fanfic on Kenshin's past I just have to have to see his heart-wrenching past for myself!

Also, I was wondering where I could get Rurouni Kenshin manga in English.  I have checked my local book store but have failed to find it.  Do you know where I could find it?

Your time and response is greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!

Thank you for your time.  You really cleared a bit up.  I really must applaud you ability because it is really well done.

Hi, Doc.

Don't worry about making comments on the site, I'm not bothered by the opinions of others and I'm glad that whatever I've written has inspired a thought or two.

In your comment about the Who Killed Kaji Page, I did not say that Misato did it, I said it would be sad if she did. This page was written some time ago in response to discussions I've had with other people who believed that Misato did do it. I did not discount that opinion and I wanted to write about it. Because Kaji is my favorite character and Misato is not too far behind, I did not want the theory to be even remotely close to the truth. Unfortunately, the theory is very arguable.

As to Misato's personality, I disagree that she could not do it. She did threaten him before with gun in hand. And part of her guilt is a feeling that she used him, guilt can cause strange reactions. Misato has a strong personality, but she has many flaws and weaknesses. To say that stopping a person who is standing against NERV -- a place, an idea that she has used to give her life purpose -- is not consistent with her character is wrong. She did not join NERV to be passive. She does carry a gun and the film proves that she knows how to use it.

Also, the way Eva is directed in the scenes before and after Kaji's death, Anno set Misato up as the killer. Artistically, why focus on the return of her gun, why focus on the name plate on her door? Maybe these scene set ups were mistakes, but if that's true, then that's too bad. After the film, Anno stated basically that it was a, well, lone gunman -- an unnamed security guy and more than anything that statement isn't consistent with the story. To introduce a nameless person to kill a main character is poor storytelling, so I'm hoping that Anno thought of this much later. Also Anno showed us Kaji's reaction to his killer without showing that person. Obviously he wanted it to be something of a mystery, but it was never solved within the TV series nor within the film, except through the scene set ups with Misato. There's no need to set up a mystery around an unnamed man in black -- just show him shooting Kaji and be done with it. Kaji's reaction is also problematic if the person is nothing to him.

It could easily have been Fuyutsuki, couldn't it? He was there and he warned Kaji that his action would get him into trouble. The problem is that the scenes are not set up for Fuyutsuki or anyone else but Misato.

I don't read things into the show or the film or any anime or any other piece of art that isn't there. I see what I see as you see what you see. That's human nature. We all have opinions. That's pretty much what the internet is for. What is amazing to me is that so many people have written to me about the Who Killed Kaji page as if I've written it as fact or that I'm doing anything more than putting forth a viable theory. I just goes to show that the mystery Anno created is important to us and has never been adequately explained by the creator himself.

As for the Evangelion pages seeming like fact, I can only credit better than decent writing skills. Otaku Central is a website created for various forms of art I am interested in, so I have no compunction about writing about my take on Evangelion or Kenshin or Gasaraki or anything else. When I base an argument on someone else's writing, I say so -- as in the Japanese history used in the Kenshin section. So, just about everything I've written for Otaku Central is supposition, speculation, and critical analysis.

Sorry about this, but I pay quite a bit of cash of this space and I'm not about to share it.

Thanks for reading and writing. After the time I put into writing, I really do appreciate that someone stopped by and actually took the time to read my scratchings.

See ya in the Wired.

Hello.  I recently viewed you page about evangelion.  It's well done, but I'm left with a question.  Where did you get this information.  Is it all just your own conceptual analysis, or id this based on something other than the series.  You have written everything as fact, not that there is anything wrong with that.  But that either means you have confidence in your own thoughts or this is based on a reliable source.  If you ripped it off, which I don't suspect, please refer me to your sources.  I don't really care it's not yours.  I don't mean to challenge you intelligence, I just seek the clearest truth I can.

Also, I find you theory on Misato killing Kaji very speculative and highly unlikely.  Please take this as constructive.  From what you say, people seem to believe this, but it seems to be reading something that isn't there.  Plus it's not psychologically consistent of the character.  If you agree, I'd like to write up and send a counter argument.  The idea is out around the theory that Aeris Gainsburough from FFVII is still alive.  I apologize if I seem rude, but I was shocked after hearing that someone got that of the series.

Thank you for your time.

I'm not sure why I'm writing this. I guess it's just another fanmail about your site. I stumbled upon it while looking for EVA info. I found it to be very through and informative. I've only recently become and EVA fan, and found your site to fill in a lot of holes from my lack of understanding.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to say, but I really love the site, keep up the good work.

LOVE and PEACE!
