Notes

Stukely Westcott's information comes from three sources:

1. History and Genealogy of the Ancestors and some Descendants of Stukely Westcott... p. 123

2. Bill Westcott's Web site on Westcott Genealogical Information. This personal page has a lot of interesting material about the Westcott family

3. Various Web sites: See

There is a discrepancy among sources concerning the number of wives Stukely had and which wife bore which child. If one goes by the dates of his marriages Julianna Marchant was the mother of Robert, Demaris and Samuel, while Rosanna Hill was the mother of Amos, Jeremiah and Mercy.

From

"Freeman of Salem 1636, one of the 13 original proprietors of Providence,
Rhode Island, settled in Warwick, Rhode lsland 1648, eight times a member of
the court of commissioners, General Assistant of Providence Plantations, 1653.
Do not know who his father was for sure, his ancestry here is guesswork.

In memoranda made in April, 1656, by Benedict Arnold and found
among his old family papers, stated: ' My father (William Arnold) and his
family sett sayle from Dartmouth in Old England, the first of May, Friday &
arrived in New England (Thursday) June 24, 1635. On board was Stukely Westcott
48 of Yeovil, and his wife with children Robert, Damaris, Samuel 13, Amos 4,
Mercy and Jeremiah.' That Benedict, then twenty years of age, should have
singled out the Westcott's to mention in his memoranda, may be safely explained
by his promising friendship with Damaris Westcott, then about fifteen years old,
and who later became his wife.

End of quote from source 8

But according to Whitman "Stukely Westcott, of whose posterity this is a genealogy, was born in the year 1592, probably in Somersetshire, England, although some historians, including the late Judge Bullock, place the shire or county of his birth as Devon. (See Part L) He died at the home of his grandson in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Jan. 12, 1677, after having been driven from his home in "Old Warwick," R. I., by the Indians. He was one of the 13 original "proprietors" of Providence Plantation and the Colony of Rhode Island in New England. The name of his wife is not definitely known, but was probably Rosanna Hill, a native of Somersetshire. They had six children when they reached Salem, Mass., June 24, 1635, all of whom, except Samuel, grew to maturity, married and had a large posterity. The family was of Providence, R. I., 1638, and of Old Warwick, R. I., 1643. Issue, 6 ch.: Robert, Damaris, Samuel, Amos, Mercy, Jeremiah."

Whitman does not mention Juliana Marchant.

An updated version of part of Whitman's work states there is no record of Rosanna Hill and that Juliana Marchant was his only wife. [S2] [S4] [S31] [S8] [S36]
