INDEX

Notes

William Lun(n) and Isabella Turnbull came to America from Roxburghshire County in the Borders area of Scotland. They arrived in America in August 1835 according to William's naturalization records, and their first child was born in New York State in 1836.

The first records of William are an intent to become naturalized (8 Feb 1843) and a petition for citizenship (22 Oct 1844), both on file in the County Clerks office, Cooperstown, NY. The latter states he lived in Edmeston and Burlington Townships, Otsego County NY for at least five years prior to the date of the petition although I cannot find him in the 1840 census. Later an indenture filed at the County Clerk's Office in Cooperstown, New York, dated 10 March 1850 states that Isabella Lunn bought a farm in Edmeston. The location of the farm in the southeast corner of the town of Edmeston can be determined from the names of owners of bordering lands (highlighted in yellow) who are shown on a map of the town of Edmeston in Otsego County made by F. W. Beers in 1868. (The names of neighbors listed on an indenture filed at the time the farm was sold in 1863 indicate even better the location of the farm.) A modern map of a portion of Otsego County shows where the farm was located (#1).

Later in 1850 the federal census for the Town of Edmeston, Otsego County, New York lists William Lunn, age 36, a farmer and Isabella, 40 both born in Scotland, and Dorothea 14, John 12, Elspeth 10, William 8, Edward 6, Isabel(la) 4, Margaret, 1 all of whom were born in New York. Isabella died in the fall of 1850 and apparently the family was separated from one another as indicated in the 1855 New York State census.

The 1855 New York State census has the following:

The 1860 federal census reveals the following:

Civil War Records from the National Archives state he enlisted in the 176th Reg't. NY Infantry, Co. G, on November 8, 1862 and was Mustered in on December 18, 1862. Although he was 48 years old by our records, his military records listed him as 44. His unit was sent to Louisana and he was captured on June 23, 1863 at Brashear City (now Morgan City). He was released by the enemy and returned to duty on August 17, 1863. He died at Bonnet Carre which was a location on the Mississippi River near Lake Pontchatrain, Louisana where there is a bend in the river. There is no mention of the cause of his death. His unit was not involved in any action from the time of his release until his death.

The New York State Census of 1865 shows Isabel L. Wright, age 17 as an adopted child living with Morris Bolton, age 60 and Lucy Maynard, 63 in the town of Burlington. I assume she is Isabel Lunn. Morris and Lucy are listed in the 1860 federal census but Isabel was not with them then. Isabel would later marry Samuel Telfer, son of James and Mary Telfer, who also lived in the Town of Burlington.

The Scottish Church Records of the LDS Church do not list a William Lun or an Isabella Turnbull having the same birthdates as our ancestors. There are several William Lun's and one John Lun born earlier who conceivably could be his ancestors, and one Isabella Turnbull born in 1810 but not on the date I have for her birth.
