Pablo Ruiz y Picasso
(1881-1973)
Although best known as a painter, Pablo Ruiz y Picasso (1881-1973) was also a master sculptor. His career spanned over 70 years, and underwent radical changes in style, as demonstrated by the paintings presented here. The first three are from his early works, prior to embarking into Cubism in 1908. Two of the "blue period", and the third from the "rose or circus period".
Also included is his monumental black and white masterpiece Guernica, which memorializes the destruction of the town of Guernica in Northern Spain by German air bombardment in 1937. The rich symbolism contained in the painting has inspired numerous interpretations.
