And, when I looked further, I saw that the answer was to use

        user myphonenumber@vzw3g.com, password vzw, phone #777
        with the VZW_1X_ON_115200 script

And it works fine.  I've got a low-speed connect with VZW_STD when
I'm in QNC territory, and high-speed (cough!) connect when in "3G" areas.

Thanks for your help.  And thank google for being able to peer inside
a PDF. :)
