![]() ![]() This photo shows a typical tenement building in Gallowgate around 1900, the existing scheme of a commercial ground floor and housing on the upper floors is still part of the city centre image. Main differences reside on height and construction techniques. It's important to note how intensive is the use of the ground floor, bringing the indoor activity to the street. This is one of the most particular aspects of the tenements buildings, and has not been succesfully replicated in more recent high rise housing projects. Also the relative low height of this type of buildings keeps a continue urban profile, as well as a visual and physycal relation between the street and the tenement's inhabitants. |
