Map of Glasgow Cross Context Area ![]() The area around Glasgow Cross and Trongate has been an important focal point within Glasgow urban structure since it's foundation times. It's the crossing between two of the oldest streets in the city, and most of the relevant episodes in Glasgow's history have happened there. The relocation of the University of Glasgow during the late 18th. century, among other factors has transformed this area negatively, shifting most of the new investment to western parts of the city. Several clearance plans have been carried out by the City Improvement Trust during the late 18th century and the Glasgow District during the 60's; the latter never completed never completed, leaving vast unused left over spaces, and reinforcing the division between the east side and downtown Glasgow. This situation has not changed since then, failing to attract private or public investment, that could improve the area. Today various efforts by housing associations focus on the potential for future housing projects around this zone; if realised, this projects could change the outlook of this area for the better. This assumption implies the presence of other urban projects that relate to the presence of housing, such as leisure spaces, transport facilities, etc. One of the proposed development schemes by the Glasgow Development Agency covers the building of housing complexes near the Trongate/Glasgow Cross area, beside London rd. and Gallowgate rd. The reconstruction of the urban fabric in this area is perceived as one important task that could support new urban activity and renewal. Within this context, a new connection building is contemplated as one of the possible new projects to take part in this scheme, to be located in the area that forms the junction between Gallowgate road and London Road. This connection building is the proposed design problem to solve, using the related CADtools in each of the design stages. The materialisation of the proposed solution trough CADtechniques beside covering academic purposes, could provide discussion material about this particular area of Glasgow. |
