The mission of the Alabama Geological Society is to
promote geology as a profession and as a science; to encourage friendship and
cooperation among members and branches of the profession; to accumulate and
make available geologic knowledge; and to encourage public appreciation of the
utility and application of geological science.

Membership
If
you are interested in joining The Alabama Geological Society, please review the
membership categories below and download a Membership
Application in PDF format. Submit the application with the appropriate dues
for the category in which you are applying for membership. If you would like to
have an application mailed to you, please e-mail or call Denise Hills (205-349-2852).
Membership
categories are as follows:
Professional
- Applicant must be a graduate of a
college or university in which they have done their major work in geology.
Professional members must have the equivalent of five years practical
experience in geological science past the Bachelor's level, two years
experience past the Master's level, or one year past the Doctoral level. Dues
are $15.00 per year.
Associate
- Any person who does not qualify as
a professional member and who is not a student of a college or university with
a declared major in geology. Dues are $12.00 per year.
Student
- Any person who is a student of a
college or university with a declared major in geology. Application for student
membership must be endorsed by a recognized member of the faculty of the
geology department in which the student is enrolled. Dues are $10.00 per year.
Members receive a quarterly newsletter and receive
discounts on Field Trips and Workshops.
Publications
The
Alabama Geological Society maintains a guidebook series spanning more than 40
years of field excursions. Guidebooks can be ordered directly from the Alabama
Geological Society, and a mail order form is available for download in PDF format.
Events
Annual
events open to members of the Alabama Geological Society are the Annual Field
Trip, which is usually held in the fall, and the Awards Banquet and Slide Show,
which is in April.
The
Annual Field Trip features two-day excursions to examine and learn about key
aspects of the geology of Alabama
Participants may receive up to 15 Professional Development Hours toward
continuing education requirements associated with professional geological licensure in
Alabama.
The
Annual Awards Banquet and Slide show is a dinner event featuring presentations
by members and guests of the Alabama Geological Society who have traveled to
the distant reaches of the globe. The highlight of the banquet each year is the
presentation of scholarships to deserving students, who are the future of
geology in the region.
A
variety of additional workshops and 1-day field excursions are also held during
the year, and participants in these events may also receive Professional
Development Hours toward their continuing education requirements.
Scholarships
The
Alabama Geological Society offers two scholarships, the John S. Winefordner
Scholarship and the John G. Newton Scholarship, to geology students at Alabama
universities. The purpose of these scholarships is to help defray the costs of

The
Society also offers a travel grant
for students making presentations at professional meetings.
