Julia's Bio

My goals used to be set pretty much on acting. I acted in several junior high and high school productions while growing up in Arlington, Massachusetts. I graduated from Arlington High and got my BA in History at Skidmore College, where I also studied Italian. I got to put my Italian to use during my junior year abroad in Florence, Italy with Syracuse University, which was really my whole goal when I started college -- go to Italy for a year.

After graduating Skidmore, I returned to Arlington (meaning I lived with Mom and Dad and my three brothers) and started to get involved with theater again. I acted in several productions in greater Boston and New Hampshire. My first paid gig was as a young Marilyn Monroe in the dinner theater show "Hollywood Can Kill You". I then acted in several independent films, including BLEACHED, EVERYBODY DOES IT and New Hampshire filmmaker Bill Millios' OLD MAN DOGS. (Check out the link to Bill Millios' production company's website at the bottom of the page -- Back Lot Films.)

I then moved to New York City, added some more films to the resume and then made the big move to Los Angeles. I was busy upon arrival with more plays and films. I made my living, as I had for years, as a software tester. So being a bit analytical minded, (after all, I am a Virgo) I became interested in film editing and took a course in AVID.

But it wasn't until a couple of years later, when I wanted to write a feature script, that I even thought of going to film school. In the fall of 2001, I enrolled at Los Angeles City College to learn enough about filmmaking to help me write a script. But in the first semester they already had us making short films, and I realized how much I loved it. So I continued full force ahead and won a scholarship from Women in Film in 2002. I got to go to one of those award shows where they honored Halle Berry and Rosie O'Donnell and gave us these big gift bags with make up, chocolate, coupons for plastic surgery and $150 off a Bertolucci watch (I couldn't afford the $150, never mind what the rest of that watch would cost). That was fun, though they forgot to mention us little scholarship winners. But hey, it was free money and I'm still grateful for that. So, anyway, I then earned my Certificate in Cinema Production in December, 2002, but I continued in school afterwards to complete the advanced film program.

In 2003, I started making the films in my LACC classes that played in various festivals between 2004 and 2007. In August, 2006, after nearly 8 years of living in Los Angeles, and after 10 years away from New England, I returned back to Boston (actually to my home town of Arlington) along with my now husband and film collaborator, Jeremy.

After having our lives be consumed by moving and settling in, in the winter of 2007 I got an itch make another short, "I Just Want to Eat My Sandwich". We filmed it in late March and it premiered at the Plymouth Independent Film Festival the following July. We then finished post on my music/experimental short, HAPPY AT HOME, last fall. It has just received its first festival acceptance.
