Peace Mask Korea (Proposal)

The Peace Mask Project is proposing
to conduct Peace Mask workshops in both Seoul and Pyongyang.
Working with the Daeum Institute, Korean NGOs and concerned individuals,
the plans and goals of this proposal are as follows:
• To hold a number of Peace Mask training workshops in both Seoul and Pyongyang. The purpose of these workshops will be to train Peace Mask Artists to create masks at locations such as universities and high schools, citizens' and NGO centers, and other community and public venues throughout the year.
• To have the Peace Mask Artists conduct local workshops of making Life Masks of a balanced cross-section (age, gender, occupation, etc.) of Seoul and Pyongyang citizens. A special emphasis will be placed on families that were separated due to the division of the country. In addition to making the masks, the artists will be asked to take portrait photographs of the models and to record their names and ages. These will later be displayed at the exhibitions along with the Life Masks.
• Two Peace Masks of traditional hand made papers will be made of each model -- one for each of the final exhibitions in Pyongyang and Seoul. These efforts will be organized by the Daeum Institute in Seoul along with a counterpart institute in Pyongyang, in coordination with the Peace Mask base in Kyoto, Japan.
• As has been the case throughout the entire Life Mask / Peace Mask effort, every attempt will be made to sustain a people-to-people, grass-roots project while being run on a non-profit basis.

Yokohama Final Exhibition
• The Peace Mask Korea project will culminate with exhibitions in Seoul and Pyongyang. An exhibition at the United Nations Headquarters would be an ideal follow-up to these exhibitions.
• An additional component of the project would be to have a documentary film made by an independent producer from the start to the finish of the project. The intent of the film would be to encourage independent grass-roots movements in other areas of conflict throughout the world.
• As the Peace Mask Korea project is currently in the proposal-stage, all suggestions, contacts and contributions will be greatly appreciated.
