We Trust Our Memories

We trust our memories
And tell the same tales
Again and again and again

Except for those little
Changes and embellishments
That finally overtake truth

With a fresh layer of paint
Hiding the true masterpiece
Of the moment that once was

Until something jolts us back
To the real laughter and tears
And we find ourselves renewed
