When he expected it least
And needed it most
There it was
Almost missed
Amidst the flotsam and jetsam
Of everyday living
Tucked amongst the brick and stone
The city doing its best
To hide it from the unaware
His eye wandering
Even as his thoughts did
Only to be pulled up short
His breath catching
His heart stopping
At the sight of that
Single solitary rose
When he expected it least
And needed it most
