Washing The Dishes

Washing the dishes
Just like a thousand times before
Soap and water and sponge
Dish by dish and glass by glass
Devoting my full attention
To each in its turn
Doing nothing at all except
Washing the dishes

Polishing my boots
Just like any other morning
The polish rubbed in
By hand and with care
Over every inch of leather
From bottom to top and back again
Nothing to think about except
Polishing my boots

Folding the laundry
Just like all my life
Shirts and pants on hangers
Socks and underwear sorted
A singular pleasure
In all the little details
That are all there is to
Folding the laundry
