A Torrent Of Words

A torrent of words
Rushing by us every day
Tumbling against our ears
As they boil and bubble
Toward the vast ocean
Of all that has ever been said
And all that ever will be

Sometimes a barely moving stream
Sparkling in the sun
Sometimes a raging river
Sweeping all in its path
Sometimes a crystal clear lake
Pausing on its journey
Sometmes the merest trickle
Struggling over the rocks

Somewhere in the torrent
Of all that we hear
And all that we say
Are the effervescent drops
Of precious substance
That is the very source
Of a life well lived
