the Music we buy

This is a list of the last 50 CDs we've purchased. We have an elaborate scientific system for rating our music. One star means we regret buying this CD. Every song sucks. Two stars means we sort of regret buying the CD. Thankfully there's one, maybe two songs, that are ok. Three stars means this was a good, solid purchase. Maybe half the songs are good. However, while we listened to the CD a lot when we first bought it, we don't expect to listen to it much after that. Four stars means this is one fine CD. Most of the songs are good, we listen to the CD a lot, and we occassionally recommend it to friends. Five stars means this CD rules the planet. In our humble opinion it's a classic. Every song is good. We ripped them all to our iPod so that they can be with us always. We listen to it in our car all the time. For the record, we'll be stingy with the 5-star rating. For each item, the first set of stars refers to Joey's review, the second refers to Jonnel's. No stars means that we haven't listened to the CD enough to form an opinion (or we think it sucks so much that we don't ever want to listen to it).

Educate. We still go to college to learn. Over the years, we have continued to consult the playlists for college radio stations to find out what college radio dj's are playing. More often than not, they discover cutting edge, interesting music long before anyone else. Check out Berkeley's KALX, Boston College's WZBC, or MIT's WMBR. Keep in mind that these web sites are run by college kids, so the charts won't be updated during summer breaks and when they're high. We also look at CMJ's web page. CMJ, which I think stands for College Music Journal, is an association that collects playlist info from many college stations around the country and combines them into national-level charts.

idiot. Ever since Green Day's American Idiot came out, we've been fascinated with the videos the band has released. I'm not even sure the videos are that good, but because I love the songs I find myself staring at the videos whenver I can. Most of them are available on Green Day's web site if you want to check them out.

Refer. My favorite web site for figuring out all the CD's in a band's discography, discovering bands that are similar to my favorite bands, or simply getting bio's for bands is allmusic.com. For every band you can imagine, the web site has a short review for each of their CD's. The only limitation is that reviews seem to be provided by individuals who are already big fans. So, for example, about the 1980's dufus band Hall & Oates, you'll read, "Hall & Oates' music was remarkably well-constructed and produced; at their best, their songs were filled with strong hooks and melodies that adhered to soul traditions without being a slave to them." Huh? But, when you can get info about complete punk rock obscurities like Rudimentary Peni on the same web site, you learn to take the bad with the good.
