Older Photos of the Youngstown & Southern Railray

Below are photos I took one fall between 1981 and 1983. Unfortunately, I do not remember exactly what year. I suspect, however, that it was in 1983. There are a couple photos here that might be of interest to historians, or at least those interested in the history of the Youngstown and Southern Railway. If you have any information that you would like to share about these photos, please feel free to write me an email. I will be glad to include the information and credit you for it.

I have another photo of this same bend that I took in 2001. It is somewhere else on this site.

Here we are on the east side of Negley, looking west. Somewhere behind me, I believe, is the switch to the Smith Ferry branch.

Cannellton Spur

Now here is a puzzler. In Cannellton, there is a long spur that breaks off the main line, heading west and north. As the line tucks into the hillside, there used to be this building. I have no idea what function it filled. If you have any information about this building and its function, please email me by clicking on the link above. Unfortunately, this building is gone now, torn down, or fallen through neglect, I do not know, but it was just a pile or rubble the last time I went by.

Now, here is a sight worth seeing. This is another landmark that is gone. This water tower used to stand outside the shops in Negley, but is gone. The caboose also, of course.

Another sight no longer to be seen--these box cars are just a couple of the many that used to line the road from one end to the next. They were waiting their turn at the choppers. They were long ago, I presume, chopped up into scrap. The company that performed this work used to be located outside of Negley, but now is located in Darlington.
