On our way out for the night

I think we'll remember this desert for a while...

Looks like a good fit!

The Story:
Susan and I had been talking about marriage since last november. For the last month I'd been secretly looking at rings online and we had wondered into a few jewelry stores so I knew what I wanted to get. Finally last Wednesday (2/2/05) I went for a few hours to the HIP and shopped at like 7 different stores. That was scary....

Finally, I settled on a beautiful ring from Helzberg and I got it that night. So next I called the Grand Lux Cafe in Chicago and told them what I was planning on doing. They told me I could call back on Saturday and get on the "Priority Seating List" which meant that once we got there instead of waiting 90 minutes we ended up waiting only 3 or 4!! Plus, they let me specify I wanted one of the awesome tables overlooking Michigan Avenue and all its lighted trees. It was way romantic!

We got there Saturday night (2/5/05) and were seated right away. Once we had ordered, "I went to the bathroom". Actually, I ran after our waitress and tracked her down. I gave her the box with printed instructions attached. I explained what I wanted her to do and then calmly went back to my table. For the rest of dinner, I was all weird acting and barely ate anything (cause I was so nervous!) Despite being very hungry, I couldn't eat and just kept hinting about how dessert would be better.

When dessert was finally ready, Megan (our waitress) came by and told us that "dessert would be out shortly" (which was my prearranged cue to start!) So I began talking. I told Susan how special our time together had been and how I really loved her and wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. Then Megan came out with the cake and a second plate with the ring box on it. I told Susan that "maybe you'll like this one better..." By that point I was down on one knee asking her to marry me!

She replied with a very enthusiastic "YES!" and we kissed. Megan had told all the other waiters so they had gathered to watch. This got the attention of most of the restaurant diners who proceeded to cheer and clap. Then I had Susan stand up so everyone could see us and we kissed and they clapped again. For the rest of the evening, people would periodically stop by our table to congratulate us. We both had a great time and felt like we were in a movie! :-)
