| Back to School - Part 7 | | Date Created: Jan 14, 2005, 09:39 AM |
So this is the 7th time that I've made the long 12 1/2 hour drive from Shawnee to Chicago to return to school. And frankly, I'm really glad its the last. Sure, I split it into two days and now I have a nice and comfortable car that makes long travel so much easier but this was seriously the trip from hell...
I left Wednesday morning.... oh wait that was the plan, I didn't actually leave until 2:00 PM. I kept getting delayed while I was trying to pack. Plus my mom's computer needed some attention (and I still didn't even figure out what was wrong with it...grrrr) so that took way too long. Once I got on the road, things started going fine... fine that is, until I reached a little town called "Tulsa".
Tulsa had apparently received lots of rain prior to my arrival, so every vehicle from the smallest car to the largest semi was throwing up crap loads of dirty road mist. Which made me happy after washing my car the day before, believe me... This pretty much was the case all the way from Tulsa to Joplin, MO where I stopped for dinner. As soon as I got back in my car it proceeded to start raining. By the time I got to the interstate again, the rain had turned to heavy rain coupled with lots of lightning. And this is what I spent the next four hours driving through on very curvy, very hilly, and very dark Missouri roads. Needless to say, I feared for my life. |
And its not like the next day was any better. Oh no, my friends.... as much as I thought I'd die Wednesday night, Thursday proved to be the more life threatening half of the trip. I spent more than four of the six hours driving thru heavy snow. Sure I said the rain was heavy, but this was crazy. Visibility was somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 of a mile. And the roads were icy too. More than once I ended up hitting my breaks only to find that my car's traction control light would come on to announce to me that it was trying to save my life. And regardless, my car would slip back and forth laterally a few times as it slowed down. Kids, thats a fun feeling. I recommend it to everyone.
Oh well, I finally made it. And I'm happy to be back. Now that I'm done with all that, I just gotta do that whole "school" part. So we'll see how that turns out. Stay tuned! |
