JULY
stark raving naked gold underwater
they say she could hold her breath
for eight minutes at a time like a loon
she was all bronzed and blue suited
till it was midnight and off came her
bathing costume her hair like corn silk
clear down her back to her bottom
she d disappear and we d all go out
to the end of the dock to see where
she d come up and people drinking
late into the night in the Castle Tavern
flooded the windows overlooking the
lake like so much whipped cream and
strawberries the air went still except
for the quiet peeping of the crickets
and it felt as if inside and out we all
held our breath until the surface of the
water exploded out she rose into
the air landed on the silver surface
of the Forest Park float out beyond the
second rock we used to dive off there
she stood like a statue carved by Michael
angelo the moonlight stroking the final
touches to a perfect work of art then
she was out of sight gone again into the
summer night vanished like all the memories
of Pop catching forty-three blue gills Mom
falling backwards off the second rock
saved by Uncle Owen the cottage catching
fire from an unsnuffed Lucky Strike the
rattle snake that came to supper the bear
who ate the onions and potatoes on the back
porch July offered all of that and more
when she broke through the water spent
a second or two with the transfixed summer
residents then returned to the deep leaving
us with the faint scent of cinnamon
oregano and bayberry lasting through
the year till we came back to dust and wash
hang our bathing suits out on the line
to air out all our memories of midnights
