A bit of Lit
Its boring in class...again... thoughts on a
rainy day...
Stoker’s character in “Dracula”
says emphatically “we are all madmen” yes, even “God’s
madmen.” Stevenson’s “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” puts
forth that we are “inches away from the depths of evil.” Our
“good facade” is only skin deep and “pure, unadulterated
evil” is lurking right below the surface. They are right after all, there
is a sense that because of stress and anger, the sin nature, that old man, is
waiting, waiting for the window of opportunity to come out and destroy our name.
The name that means so much to us, the name that embodies all we are. In the
movie “Sommersby” Richard Gere's character would rather die with a
good identity than live with a bad one. I was struck with the reality of
Proverbs, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great
riches…” Here was a man that would give up his very life if only to
die with a good name. Yet, I have thrown my name around like it was so much
garbage in the street. That name means much more to me now. A name is all you
have. Money comes and goes, success, is just a part of the fair facade, but a
good name, that is worth so much more. I wonder what my name brings to the mind?
We are kept from losing that name, kept from absolute evil, by a loving God who
instilled in us a conscience, thereby establishing His divinity and order within
the frailty of mortals.
