What is God Doing?

What does one do when God seems to destroy what they are and who they are? Its a paradigm through which many interpret the world. If God does all that happens (in other words, He actively "pushes the button") to us in life, then certain truths are a reality. What follows are some thoughts regarding an event and what that means about God. In this I have to note that it is the Word that tells us about God and not circumstances. I would be interested on anyone else's thoughts on the matter...

On a more relational theology

Can it be said that religion is relational? Today we had an exercise where we chaplains sat in a circle and discussed what formed us in our walk with Christ. We did this in small groups. My group had five chaplains in it. The other chaplains spoke of cognitive and intellectual studies. They brought books and sermons that they had read showing how these shaped who they were and what they had become.
I had forgotten the project and had to think through it just before we met. As I sat and thought through what had shaped me I pulled up several pictures on my computer.

How to secure a building

The military is moving toward a Joint Operations model. This means that all the branches are working together. Just so you understand the issues involved here, note what the order "go and secure that building" means to the various services:

I suppose a little explanation is in order. I noted yesterday the Wesleyan (Methodist) teaching of Christian Perfectionism. Here's the deal...

Spiritual Fitness

This is an interesting term that defines a broad spectrum of Army activities. The word "Spiritual" according to the Army simply refers to the mental aspect of the soldier. To me, it has a much deeper connotation, however, as a chaplain, I need to help the soldier be mentally stable. (Blah, Blah, Blah - ok, I've said what was needed)

The prayer breakfast

This morning we had a "prayer breakfast." Now, this is not like what you think a prayer breakfast is - in the Army its a function that people go to. Its not church, you read general prayers and the speaker talks for a bit. I was the music chairperson.

Ethics

Now, this is where its at! If only Dr. Mapes could be here to teach this class. Even though its a saturday, I am not so unhappy about being in class - mostly because we are studying ethics. The central question is: when faced with a situation - is "divine command theory" good enough? Can you say, "its right or wrongs because God says so?"

The Family Life Chaplain

I learned a new thing today - I did not know there was such a thing as a family life chaplain. This chaplain is usually a Major or above and they work with families. They do counseling mostly. Every major installation has one.
