Welcome to DuckBites.com

The purpose of this site it to examine the follies of government and its interminable incursions on our persons.

Every single day, the State[sic] takes away another piece of our lives. Taxes, rules, licenses, speed traps, inspections, audits, permits, variances, waivers, etc. etc. Each of these I call a DuckBite. A minor irritation is a Nibble.

Each bite or nibble, by itself does not break us. Often, we don't even notice. Sometimes, we sigh and carry on. But they are remembered. Each bite adds a little scar tissue onto our souls. They make us a little more irritable; a bit more cynical.

Some people –if they collect enough bites– snap. They lash out. They BITE BACK!

Why This Site?

I was prompted to begin this site after reading about a Texas State Trooper who was shot to death while writing a ticket to a 72 year old man who wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Seat belt laws are a metaphor for the meddling, nanny, overbearing State. It is an actual visible restraint on our person. A constant reminder of the ridiculous lengths that the government will go to insinuate itself into our lives. For that 72 year old man, who had several tax issues, that ticket was the last DuckBite. He'd been nibbled once too often. He bit back and blew the trooper away.

I ask you, do you think that was a stupid reason for that trooper to die? I mean, fining an old man for not using a safety device? Personally, I think it's incredibly stupid. What a idiotic reason to die. I'd be embarrassed for that man, and his department! All the news stories concentrated on that old man's actions. They focused on the immediate action. They couldn't see the unending stream of nibbles and bites that prefaced his action. Fellow cops just dismissed the old man as a "nut case".

There are other people who have bitten back. A man in Colorado - who had issues over zoning and local governance - created a homemade tank bulldozer, and carefully knocked down a bunch of buildings in his town. His targets were not random - he went after his antagonists. Those opponents just happened to be largely the town government. Interesting. The owners of the buildings are now begging for donations to rebuild their businesses!

And of course, one of the most famous bite backs was when Carl Drega, of New Hampshire, finally had enough when he was being ticketed for having an old car! Seriously, the two officers stopped him for having rust holes in his truck! For that idiotic DuckBite, two officers paid with their lives. Drega, figuring in for a penny, in for a pound, then sought out a couple of other people who enabled the State, and killed them, too.

How would you feel if your husband died because he was giving somebody a ticket for having a rusty truck? I'd be angry that my husband was so petty that he'd bother. Further, I'd be angry at his department for condoning -much less mandating- such actions. Finally, I'd be ashamed. What a stupid way to die! My husband was a dumb vindictive bastard, hassling an old man, because, why again?

So this website is designed to expose the innumerable DuckBites encountered by us every day.

What Are DuckBites®, Exactly?

It's important to differentiate a true DuckBite® from everyday irritations. A DuckBite is an action caused directly or indirectly by government action. Whether they be rules, inspections, taxes, etc. DuckBites do not include getting onions on your burger at the drive-thru, or getting a shirt at WalMart that falls apart on its first wearing.

Sometimes, there is an indirect method that makes for a DuckBite. For example, in some parts of the country cell service is very bad. How is that a DuckBite? Well, in many cases, a single company has been given a monopoly by the local government. With no competition, service is likely to suffer. Another example is the fact that it is impossible to have a bank account in the US without giving up your privacy.

There are two levels of DuckBites, based on egregiousness.

Nibble - A tiny little irritation. Not bad enough to be a full fledged bite. An example would be the "sensitivity training" you get with a new job. At least you get paid to take it.

DuckBite - A significant offense, such as traffic ticket, tax increases, tolls, etc.

Next, each Bite or Nibble has one of four indicators as to its truthfulness or verifiability.

Debunked - Like an Urban Legend, some DuckBites turn out to be mythical, yet amusing. With our government spiraling out of control, they're easy to believe.

Anecdotal
- Intriguing stories submitted by readers. I expect to get a lot of these. By definition, most of these are not verifiable, so take them with a grain of salt.

Reported - This is a bite that has some documentation to support it from a reputable source.

Verified - Finally, the highest level, this has been verified by multiple sources, or actual witnesses deemed honest by your trusty moderator.

My own DuckBites mostly conform to "Anecdotal", and are presented as such.

Since web links come and go, I intend to cache the Reported DuckBites, and present the original links along with the dates. I assume that many of these links will break in the future, but they are left in for reference. Many times, Google will cache them, too, and you can find them again via that route. Also, I don't have to go back and fish around for broken links, if I state they are intentional.

Final Word

It is not my intention to promote violence against the State. Far from it. I wish to avoid such confrontations from happening in the first place. By placing a spotlight on stupid, capricious, and damaging actions of those working for the State, I hope to make it too uncomfortable for them to continue.

Perhaps they don't realize they are violating the Constitution. Let's show them how. Maybe they truly think that harassment of citizens is in their interest. Let's make them aware that there are consequences to those actions.

I fully believe that the answer is through the ballot box. That is why I am a member of the Free State Project. We hope to scale back the excesses of government peacefully, using persuasion and activism. Not violence.
