Trent Lott takes on the giant corporations
We learn in
this morning's Times that Trent Lott is leading the charge against
wicked insurers who take your premium dollars and then deny coverage when it's
needed most, relying on dense, arcane language that even lawyers have trouble
deciphering.Yes, you read that right.
Trent Lott is standing up for the common man against big business. He's even
threatening to go after the industry's antitrust exemption, not to mention it's
almost total exemption from federal
regulation.Has Trent seen the light?
Can we expect him to also take on the oil companies, the Halliburtons, the
Wal-Marts?No, we can't. Not unless his
ox is gored by one of those entities, for Lott is going after the insurance
companies because they had the temerity to treat him like the rest of the rabble
and deny his claim for Katrina related damages to his shorefront property. It's
pretty obvious that some adjuster somewhere made a terrible mistake. They
obviously should have seen their way clear to providing coverage for Trent. Had
they done so, he'd be in their corner right
now.I've commented
before on the tendency of Republicans to see virtue in what would
normally be considered the liberal or left side of a question, when their own
interests are at stake. If their kid needs special education, they support
special education. If their husband has Alzheimer's, they support stem cell
research. Somehow, they can never make the leap to empathizing with people who
have problems different than their own.
