Simmons bows out, look who may be in
Life is full of little
ironies.
Now that it seems clear that
Rob Simmons sees the handwriting on the wall, and has turned his back on a run
against Courtney in '08, it was only to be expected that we would be hearing
about other potential opponents. Today's Norwich Bulletin (link unavailable as I
write due to some sort of site error at the Bulletin) surveys the potential
field. And a lackluster one it is, with one
exception.
And here's where the irony
comes in. The one exception is a guy I see every day of the workweek. In fact,
all I have to do is look straight ahead, out my office door and into his. His
name is Sean Sullivan, formerly head of the US Submarine base in Groton,
currently low person on the associate totem pole (at least so far as time in
service) at my law firm.
So far Sean
has taken a firm "I'm not sure" position about his candidacy. I have, of course,
pointed out the benefits to be gained by acquiring proficiency in his new
profession. For some reason, which I can't quite figure out, he suspects my
motives.
I have a reason for
preferring that Sean stay out of the race, beyond the fact that he appears to be
the strongest of the candidates mentioned in the article. One doesn't criticize
one's fellow workers, at least outside of the workplace, so his candidacy would
crimp my style, blog wise. Even if one did, I couldn't. It's much easier to heap
invective on someone you don't know, or do know and dislike. Neither of those
conditions is satisfied in this case. So I am hoping that Sean doesn't run. If
he does, and stays on at the firm, I'll likely steer clear of writing about him,
preferring in that case to just pump up
Joe.
Whatever Sean decides, I'm
confident that two years from today he'll be practicing law, if not across the
hall, then somewhere else.
