Doing the numbers
Boy, am I glad someone else got around to this.
It occurred to me that someone should take Joe up on his challenge and count the
"attacks" during Monday's debate. I was having a lot of trouble working myself
up to watching it again, when, lo and behold, I see the job has been done at My Left Nutmeg . The
intrepid and obviously masochistic Neil Fink, who wrote the piece, appears to
have used reasonable
criteria:Attacks were
counted as statements where one candidate directly called out another candidate
by name and said something negative about him. For Lamont and Lieberman this was
challenging and required some judgment on my part. Schlessinger made it easy by
preceding most attacks with the statement "with all due
respect..."Have you ever noticed
that whenever someone begins a sentence with the phrase "with all due respect"
they right away show absolutely no respect? I guess that's all the respect the
consider due.Anyway, the numbers are
about what you'd expect. Lieberman was indeed the target of the most attacks
(what's that line about there being nothing in the middle of the road but Yellow
Stripes and Dead Armadillos?), but he launched more at Lamont than Lamont did at
him. Full stats at the link. This
campaign is getting fun again. Evidently Joe is melting down, and even got his mike shut off at today's not yet televised
debate . Thanks Alan. If Ned wins, I'll try my darndest to get you a
few free wampum points.Addendum: Some
purloined debate footage here . Ned's sounding much better, and I love
the fact that he slammed Joe on the torture bill.
