Joe confirms, it's all about Joe
Yesterday Joe campaigned with Republicans, today
he said he withdrew his support of the Democratic Congressional
candidates in Connecticut .
Declaring himself a
"non-combatant," U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, in remarks at a New Haven press event
Friday, raised anew the question of whether his "independent" candidacy will
help Republicans hold onto three Congressional seats in Connecticut -- and
control of the U.S. House of
Representatives.Lieberman
-- who after losing an Aug. 8 Democratic primary to Ned Lamont has launched a
third-party bid to hold onto his seat in the Nov. 7 general election -- was
asked whether he still endorses Diane Farrell, Joe Courtney and Chris Murphy,
three Democrats looking to unseat endangered Republican incumbents Chris Shays,
Rob Simmons and Nancy
Johnson.“I’m
a non-combatant,” Lieberman declared. “I am not going to be involved
in other campaigns. I think
it’s better if I just focus on my own
race.” (My
emphasis)No real news there. He's
been focusing on himself for the past 18 years.
In many ways, this is good news for
the Congressional candidates. When he was a Democrat, he weighed them down. Any
time they talked about Iraq they ran the risk of having Lieberman shoved back at
them. Now that he's officially abandoned them, they should return the favor in
spades. They should openly call him what he is: a Republican stalking horse.
They should tie Joe to their opponents. The Republicans have embraced him - they
can have him. There may well come a time when Shays, Simmons and Johnson start
running away from him too. Joe is becoming more extreme and saying more bizarre stuff
about Iraq now than he has in a long time. Meanwhile, Shays is trying to sound like Lamont
lite . Wouldn't it be nice if they dragged each other
down?NOTE: This post has been altered
