Joe Courtney gets a coveted committee assignment

From the Day's web site :

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, was notified today that he will serve on the House Committee on Education and Labor.

Courtney had been appointed to the House Armed Services Committee in December.

Courtney said he requested the assignment so that he may begin to address education funding shortfall in eastern Connecticut's schools, to help lower the cost of a college education, protect individuals' retirement and pension plans, and bring tax fairness to middle-class families.

The committee assignment is an important one as Congress will consider the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, the Higher Education Act, and the Head Start early education law, Courtney said.

Great news for Joe. It won't be easy for Simmons (his presumed opponent) to attack him in 2008 for not being on the right committees.
