Surging into chaosWhile John McCain
takes a casual stroll in Baghdad (accompanied by a mere 100 soldiers
and two helicopters) amid claims of surge success because of a slight downturn
in Baghdad violence, non-Baghdad
Iraq is dissolving further into chaos. Seems to me that just such an
outcome was predicted for the "surge". Bush keeps warning us that setting an
exit date will just allow the enemy (whoever the enemy might be, that's never
really been clear) to wait us out. But announcing a "surge" aimed at tamping
down violence in one place effectively notifies the "enemy" that it ought to
concentrate its efforts elsewhere, which is exactly what is
happening.
