THE THIRD GENERATION
THE GRANDCHILDREN OF JOHN & CATHERINE WIANT
3d. THE CHILDREN OF BENJAMIN AND EVE WIAN
1. DANIEL The first son in this
family was born in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania,
on January 28th, 1833 (42). He worked on his father's land until
his marriage on February 25, 1858, to Mary Jane Swab
(41). Mary Jane was born
January
11, 1838 (43), in Walker Township, Mifflin County (44) to John
and Margaret (Yeager) Swab (43). Both
the Schwab and Jager
families had settled in Pennsylvania in the early eighteenth century.
Daniel and Mary Jane settled in Harris Township, Centre County,
just across from Mifflin County, where their first child, Francis, was born in 1860. It is interesting
to note that the census of that year recorded the family as Daniel,
Mary and Franklin Wayland. They had, altogether, 9 children, of
whom four died young (33). Those that survived, as well as Francis,
were Annie, born in 1862, Margaret, born in 1867, Ida, born in
1870, and Sarah, born in 1872 (18, 27). By this time the family
had moved to the neighbouring town of Potter (27). Then again
they moved, to Spring Township, and in1898 finally back to Potter
where Daniel bought a farm at Centre Hall (45). Daniel died on
August 11, 1911, at an age of 78, and was buried at Centre Hall
cemetery (42). His wife lived on until she was 81, dying on February
26, 1919, and being buried beside her husband. Their children
are described in the fourth generation.
2. MARY ANN was born about 1835 in Union Township and married after 1860 (18) to James Fowler. They settled in Shirleysberg in neighbouring Huntingdon County where Mary Ann died in 1903. They had at least two children - Lizzie (b 1871) and Benjamin F (b 1873) according to the 1880 census. No entry could be found in 1900.
3. HENRY SANFORD was born in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, on October 8th, 1843 (84). If his brother Daniel was a solid farmer, spending his life at improving the security of his family, "Harry" seems to have led a far less stable and more varied life. He labored on his father's farm(18) until the civil war broke out in 1861). On October 21st of that year this eighteen year old lad, 5' 10 1/2", fair complexioned, brown of hair and eyes, enlisted in the Union Army, being assigned to C Company of the 45th Pennsylvania Volunteers (47). On September 14, 1862 he fought in the battle of South Mountain, Maryland, in which Confederate General Lee was turned from his intended invasion of Pennsylvania. His being wounded may have been a blessing as it kept him from the great battle of Antietam three days later, in which there were over 20,000 casualties. "In the act of loading his gun he received from the enemy a gunshot wound taking effect in his right hand across the top thereof, cutting the muscles and knocking off a piece of the bone from the knuckle of the little finger. He was treated at Camden St. General Hospital in Baltimore, and remained there until discharge on December 5th, 1862." (47). He returned to Mifflin County but maybe the excitement of the way had left him restless, for, about 1869, he went to visit his aunt in Ohio. On September 28th, 1871 he was married by Rev. C. L. Barlow to Talitha Fleming at Cardington, Morrow County, Ohio (47). Talitha was a daughter of Benjamin and Hannah (Worth) Fleming, born August 24, 1845. She was also a grand-daughter of Elizabeth Wian Fleming , Henry's aunt. Settling in Lincoln Township, Morrow County, Ohio, the Wians had two children - Benjamin in 1872 and Nellie in 1875. While the children were still young Henry decided he did not like Ohio and moved back, alone, to Pennsylvania. He took up farming at Hannah Furnace near Port Matilda in Centre County, across the Bald Eagle Mountains fromwhere his brother and mother were living. He visited them, of course, and on one such visit was "stricken with consumption before he could get home." His death followed on April 5th, 1891, and he was buried at the Pleasant Gap cemetery (48). Talitha Wian died of cancer at the home of her daughter in Cardington, Ohio, on May 23, 1909 (49,50). Their children are described in the fourth generation.
4. MARGARET was born on July 2nd, 1845 (51) in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. She married Henry Swab (January 11, 1838 - June 25, 1913) (51) of Walker Township, Mifflin County, who was the twin brother of Mary Jane Wion (see Daniel above). They settled in Harris Township, Centre County, after their marriage (28). There is no record of children. Margaret Swab died May 5th, 1929 and was buried next to her husband at Centre Hall (51).
5. ELIZABETH was born December 18, 1849, in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania (52). On November 19, 1868 she was married by Rev. Daniel Kerr to Jacob F. Royer. They settled in Potter Township, Centre County, where their family included Mary (c 1870), Daniel (c 1871), Benjamin (c 1874), Granville (c 1876), John (c1878), Maggie and Elsie. Elizabeth died by taking rat poison March 8, 1891, at the age of 41, and was buried atTusseyville cemetery in Potter Township (52).
6. NANCY CATHERINE was born in September 1852 (33), in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, and was still under age when her father died in 1869. The court appointed David Weilor as guardian, although the census of the following year showed her in the household of John Garver, (administrator of her father's estate), in Union Township. Shortly after this she married her cousin William R. Reed, a son of Susannah Moser Reed . The couple settled in Potter Township, Centre County, where their first children were Harriet and Mary, born in 1873, and Josannah, born in 1876 (28). Later children were William and Mabel (33). An obituary for William Reed, Dec. 10, 1908 gives his widow as Kate Wion.
7. ELLEN JANE was born August 1, 1857 (18, 55), in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, and was still under 14 when her father died in 1869. The court appointed her mother as guardian and they went to live with brother Daniel in Centre County. About 1875 she married William Gross and settled in Harris Township, Centre County, where their earliest children were Samuel in 1876, Charles in 1877 and Franklin in 1880 (28). Later children were Daniel, Bertha, Mary, John and Clarence. Ellen Jane's husband died in 1913, while she lived until May 18, 1926 (55). They were buried at Pine Hall Cemetery in Ferguson Township.
8. HARRIET EMMA was the youngest child of this family, being born November 16, 1860 (46) in Union Township. When her father died in 1869 she went with her mother and sister Ellen to live in Centre County with her brother, Daniel. Here she grew to maturity, spending her late teens in the household of her sister, Margaret Swab (28). She married J. Mitchell Garbrick (son of Joseph and Susannah Garbrick (53))and had a daughter Mabel in 1885. Ill health, starting around 1896, caused such depression that in 1898, on October 10, she committed suicide (46). She was buried at Pleasant Gap next to her brother Henry.
