3B. THE CHILDREN OF SOLOMON & CATHERINE WIAN

revised may, 2008

1. JOHN was born in Union Township about 1832, first appearing in the 1850 census as an eighteen year old laborer. Shortly afterwards he married Eve Ann Hyle (15) a daughter of Philip and Catherine Hyle of Union Township, born in 1831 (16). After their marriage they settled near Ennisville in Jackson Township, in neighbouring Huntingdon County (18), where their first child, Margaret, was born in 1852. She was followed by Lewis in 1854, Emma in 1856, William C. in 1857, Sarah in 1860, Nancy in 1862, Anna in 1865 and Carrie in 1867. By 1870 the whole family had moved across to Centre County, living in Bellefonte, the county seat (27).Then John's wife, Eve Ann, died. On July 2nd, 1874 he remarried Maggie J. Rider (19) and had three more children, Ada in 1878 and Mabel in 1880. On July 2nd,1881 John Wian died at the age of 49 (19), his youngest son, John R., being born 3 months after his death. His 11 children are described further with the fourth generation.

2. PETER was born in Union Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania on December 9, 1833 (19), and married Elizabeth Hyle (the sister of Eve Ann, mentioned above) on May 1,1855 (Rev. Klink) according to the Lewistown True Democrat. Elizabeth was born December 9, 1837 (29). Peter set up as a farmer in Armagh Township (neighbouring Union Township) where his first child Francis was born in 1856 (30). The child must have died, however, as the1860 census shows the only child to be Laurence, born in 1858. There were 12 children alltogether, the younger ones being born in SpringTownship, Centre County where Peter resettled his family during the 1860s (27). Lunger, the third child, was born in 1860, followed by Anna (1862), John (1864), Emma (1867), James (1869), Margaret (1870), George (1872), Catherine (1875), Mary Jane (1878), and Florence (1881). Peter died in his fifty first year on April 30, 1884, and was buried in the Pleasant Gap Cemetery (19). Elizabeth moved into Bellefonte and lived until December 1, 1913. She was buried in the Bellefonte Cemetery (19). The children of Peter and Elizabeth Wian are described further with the fourth generation.

3. EPHRAIM, who was born April 1 (15), 1837 (16), and died in March,1898 (32), married Elizabeth White (1837 - November 11, 1873) daughter of William and Mary Ann White of Belleville, Mifflin County, on May 7, 1861 (15). "He attended the common schools of Union Township and worked on the home farm until 16. He then began working as a farm hand for the farmers of the vicinity. When about 22 he was employed in William Mann Jr. & Company's axe factory and remained in their employ for about thirteen years. In 1874 he began farming on one of the John R.Mitchell farms in Dry Valley: here he remained 2 years but upon the decease of his wife returned to Reedsville and resided there for one year. He then moved to Lewistown and lived in Third Street. In 1885 he removed to the house in which he now resides. Since his residence in Lewistown Mr.Wian has been engaged in butchering but relinquished it for farming when he purchased the Henry Buch farm in Granville Township. He has judiciously improved this farm and brought it to a fine state of cultivation. Mr.Wian's comfortable and assured position among business men has been acquired by his ability, diligence and honorable dealings. He is a "self made" man, in regard to his means, which are the outcome of his own persevering efforts. Although frugal he gives willingly to further the progress of the borough, or for any beneficient object. Although decided in his opinions on politics, as a democrat, he has no aspirations towards political office. He attended the Methodist Episcopal Church."(15). Ephraim and Elizabeth Wian had five children, Anna Margaret in 1864, William H. in 1866, Charles B.in 1867, Mary 0. in 1870 and George T. in 1872. These children are further described with the fourth generation.

4. MARY JANE was born in 1839 (16) and died of lead poisoning at the age of 14 along with her younger brother Levi (15).

5. LEVI (1842?) is supposed to have died of lead poisoning at the age of about eleven with his fourteen year old sister Mary Jane (15). However he was not listed in any census, so he must have been under ten when he died. Mary Jane was listed as an eleven year old in 1850. Perhaps Levi died just before the census was taken and Mary Jane just after.

6. ELIZABETH ANN was born in 1844 (16). She married Scott W. Tate, settling in Pleasant Gap, Centre County, where they had 12 children (15), including Olivia, Carrie, John, Frank, Eliphus, Orpha, and Catherine (28).

He married Catherine (Mc)Cafferty on January 31, 1879 (Lewistown Gazette), settled in Derry Township, Mifflin County, and had four children living (15). The 1880 census of Yeagertown, Derry, listed him as an axemaker with 24 year old wife, Haddie, and son George, born the previous November. The Lewistown Gazette recorded the death of their son Walter on February 9, 1883, aged 10 months and 28 days. Eliphaz lived for some time in Centre County, settling finally in Lewistown, Mifflin County. "Life," as he was known, died April 26, 1895, his death being noted the following week in the Bellefonte paper (56). The 1900 census records Caroline Wian, born January 1856, living at West 4th Street in Lewistown, Mifflin County - the mother of 7 children of whom four still live, namely Florence, born December 1883, Myrtle, born December 1885, Charles, born July 1890, Dorsey, born April 1892. In 1910 Myrtle and Dorsey were still living with her. In 1920 a Caroline Wian, 63, living with daughter Cora, 35, and husband Harry A. Lawrence, were residing at Sunbury, Northmberland County (89). These children are further described with the fourth generation. Eliphaz and Caroline are buried at St Marks in Lewistown where her death date is given as 1937, aged 82.
