One of the reasons for discontinuing is that it is made with BlogWaveStudio and the developer of this fine application for Mac no longer supports the software.

A new blog is integral to my newly vamped site here.

Cliff introduced the church group to the website last Sunday. The site contains information about the 'church in the house' idea.

I also made a Web Developers version of the site which contains a blog to help us develop the site as a team.

I have today been informed, in writing, by Edexcel that they have 
decided not to seek re-accreditation for GCE Music and Music 
Technology from QCA.

This in effect means that they are not going to offer these A level 
subjects after 2009 – thus the last AS intake of students will be 
in September 2007.

The reasons given behind this decision are (and I quote)
….’ We believe that the complexity of the current assessment model 
and constraints of the new subject criteria have made it impossible 
to produce a sustainable specification which will be attractive to 
schools and colleges. Therefore our strategy is to focus on the 
BTEC Music and Music Technology provision which has proved popular 
in our centres. We hope that centres will choose to move to the 
appropriate BTEC National Awards in Music and Music Technology….’


This decision has been reached without ANY consultation from senior 
examiners. I have not been asked to attend any meetings about this 
matter, or to submit my opinions or ideas in relation to the 
‘viability’ of a new music technology syllabus. QCA have created 
separate subject criteria for Music Technology, and these would, in 
my opinion, make it feasible to develop a very creative and 
attractive qualification for schools and colleges.

There appears to have been little thought given to the implications of this decision. As the sole examination board providing Music Technology, this decision in effect kills off A level music technology – at a time when student numbers are growing, centre 
investment in resources has been significant, and university acceptance of the subject is good.

The assumption that centres will migrate easily to BTEC is at best 
naïve and at worst demonstrates a total lack of understanding of 
the two very different qualifications. The majority of centres 
offering AS and A2 do not offer BTEC qualifications and are 
unlikely to do so.

I would urge you to help force Edexcel to reconsider this decision by sending an email or letter to various interested parties such as the Chief Exec of Edexcel, Mr Jerry Jarvis 
jerry.jarvis@edexcel.org.uk, QCA, your local MP or another interested supportive party. I believe that it would be very useful to enlist the assistance of your Headteacher or Principal in securing additional writing communication to Edexcel about this matter, and please feel free to print out a copy of this letter and 
show it to them.

It is my considered opinion that we must unite to stop an American PLC (Pearson who own Edexcel) dictating the content and format of music education within the UK, and that we must ensure that future generations of students have the ability to study and be accredited with, GCE AS and A2 qualifications in Music Technology.

If you have any suggestions as to how we can progress this campaign over the next few days, please feel free to email me.

Panning to the right the first tall building on the horizon is the famous Rotunda building. The red brick elevation on the canal is the rear of The Birmingham Gun Barrel Proof House built in 1813. The more elegant frontage can be seen from the train entering New Street station. The MultiMap shows no canal, but this was once a very busy point on the canal system where 4 canals meet. 1. A round starts by someone asking the question:

As a boy in Adelaide, I had the opportunity to play and explore a Modular Moog Synthesizer, which resembled a telephone exchange, which the owner Philip Jolly had assembled in a restaurant in Melbourne St, North Adelaide then again at the Elder Conservatorium. It was these experiences which fired an enthusiam for electronic music which continues to this day.

On returning to England in 1971, I visited Peter Zinovieff at the EMS Studios in Putney and had the use of a VCS3, photo right: VCS3 - The Putney, and an AKS during the summer of 1973.

Since then I have played and programmed many different synthesizers in performance and recording sessions since then, e.g. the ARP Odyssey on John Foxx's first solo album Metamatic, when we 're-recorded' the single Underpass for Top Of The Pops, we nearly had to book a string section because an MU representative saw 'strings' written on the track sheet of the tape box, but this was simply a name John & Gareth had given that sound.

On May 23rd 1982, the Central London Branch of the Musicians' Union proposed a motion to ban the use of synthesizers and drum machines, as they feared it would threaten their employment. There were many of us 'synthesists' who turned up to oppose the motion. I was booking orchestral musicians at the time for my arranging work with the 'synth band' Heaven 17's album The Luxury Gap. The proposers were orchestral session players. Many of us 'synthesists' opposed the motion with reasonable evidence and good argument, the motion failed... just. Extraordinary to think that now. This motion was not sustainable, of course, although it did lead to the founding of a 'splinter' Independant Association of British Synthesists, (I think that's what it was called). If you attended that meeting, or can add more information, perhaps you could e-mail me, as I would like to create a webpage about it. More on this soon... I hope.

While on my break up North, I had the opportunity to practice on a recently purchased Aulos AF-2 baroque flute. The challenges in playing this instrument for the first time included intonation and fingerings, f natural is a particularly troublesome note. However, it's wonderful to be able to play baroque music on this instrument.

I also bought some music (JS Bach - Partita in A minor BWV 1013, JJ Quantz - Caprices, Various - Aria di Camera) from The Early Music Shop in Bradford. While I was there I played some other more expensive examples of traverso, this plastic Aulos turned out to be the best entry level instrument and very reasonably priced.

Just returned from a welcome break away. Stayed in Leeds and visited York, Bradford, Otley, Skipton and also a brief 4 hour visit to Edinburgh. Thanks Pete... nice one, until next time hame.

The flautist and the tape are speaking in the same language - a language made up of the sounds of the flute and the voice - but are saying completely different things.
Although the tape is made entirely from flute and voice sounds, it is essentially abstract, a landscape of sculpted forms, cold, and at times almost violently un-human.
The flautist explores this landscape for us, following a winding path of free material, almost improvisatory in character. In contrast to the tape, the flute part concentrates very much on the human qualities of performance. Many sections exhibit all-too human qualities of nervousness, panic and hysteria, with the flautist's voice being used to theatrical, almost melodramatic effect; whilst others are contrastingly calm and dreamlike.
Electronic amplification is used to 'zoom-in' on the flute, to reveal a secret inner world of breath sounds, clicking keys, and mysterious whistling tones. The live electronics similarly function as a kind of microscope, picking out elements of the flute part and magnifying them out of proportion.

• Premier performed with BEAST, as part of the rumours series, at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham, in November 1993. (It is a recording of this concert that is heard here.)

I went for a walk from Kings Heath to Moseley to check out the scene and take some photos. Many trees damaged and some buildings affected, some people injured, cars picked up and dropped, roofs ripped from buildings. The traffic diversions caused much delay to the rush hour commuters, a bonanza for tradesmen doing repairs. Very warm now, it was cold before the tornado.

Way back in the 1860s, Joseph Hudson, who was a Birmingham trained toolmaker, converted his humble washroom at St. Marks Square, which he rented for 1s. 6d. About Thumpy®: Thumpy the thumb flute is a relatively simple instrument with a surprisingly beautiful and natural sound. This new flute has been designed and developed by Dutch flutist Wil Offermans. It is constructed out of a straight, cylindrical wooden pipe with an embouchure-hole near the middle of the pipe. The pitch can be controlled by covering the open endings with the thumbs (with the basic combinations of: open-open; open-closed; closed-open and closed-closed) and combining the various harmonics. Because of the primitive character of this flute, it may remind us to the European bone flutes or the Japanese Ishibue (natural stone flute).

I first heard this on Keith Rowe's recommendation. He lent me the double album while I was living in Brixton. Either I returned it or mislaid it, but the music has stuck with me all this time. I played by ear the piano parts and transcribed the horn parts while in York, the drums and bass are fictitious, added this week.
Played and used as pedagogy during saxophone classes at the Tower Hamlets Adult Education Institute from 1975-1982 and elsewhere, if we've played together, you'll most likely already have a had written copy incorrectly entitled Angel Numali, an upbeat version of Nomali, which is on In The Townships by Dudu Pukwana.

The Scorch version here is my what I've remembered or invented in the past 30 years. Hopefully, I'll get hold of a copy of this track soon and get quite a surprise, we'll see.

4. NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND. It has been a millennium since a global war known as the "Seven Days of Fire" destroyed human civilization. Only a tiny remnant of humanity survives, huddled in small enclaves across the continents. The Fukai, a thick jungle whose spores and plantlife are poisonous to humans, covers much of the Earth’s surface. (English subtitle)
5. ONLY YESTERDAY. Omohide Poro Poro (1991) In 1966, 10-year-old Taeko is enviously finding that her friends are making trips to their families' hometowns during summer break. Her family is native to the Tokyo area, though, and has no such plans. Grandmother plans to go to a hot spring resort (atami), and Taeko's older sisters Yaeko and Nanako tell her about how nice it is, until their enthusiasm almost traps them into going. 6. PRINCESS MONONOKE. One day, an Emishi village is endangered when a Tatari Gami (Curse God) is approaching it. A huge monster covered with black snakes/worms like feelers, the Tatari Gami scorches everything along its path.(English subtitle)
7. WHISPER OF THE HEART. On a hot August night, fourteen-year-old Shizuku Tsukishima arrives home from the store with a carton of milk. Putting it in the refrigerator, she pours a glass of barley tea for herself and her parents. While he waits for his printing to complete, Shizuku’s father remarks that the library he works at is switching from the old cards to barcodes. Shizuku remarks that she likes the card system better. 8. POM POKO. Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pompoko (The Raccoon War) (1994) A group of Tanukis investigate an abandoned house. They feel that they have made a real find with a large house to live in. Unfortunately, they find out the hard way why the house is abandoned. A construction vehicle's shovel arm suddenly rips through the roof and the tanukis scramble away. (English subtitle)
9. MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO. TONARU NO TOTORO (1988) A 11-year-old Satsuki and 4-year-old Mei Kusakabe riding in a truck making its way down a country road in rural 1950's Tokyo. Along with their father, a professor of anthropology at a Tokyo university, the girls are on their way to their new home in the country. Their mother is recovering from an illness, and they have bought a house to provide her a more healthy environment to recover in. 10. KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE. Majo no takkyûbin (1989) On a grassy knoll in the town of Karikiya, thirteen-year-old Kiki listens to a favorable weather report for the next few days on a small radio. She quickly considers what she just heard. Her mind made up, she rushes home. There, she runs into her mother, a witch who specializes in chemistry and medicinal potions, and Mrs. Dora, an elderly woman who is there to pick up a potion. Kiki excitedly tells them both that she has decided to leave that evening, instead of next month, due to good weather and a full moon. She rushes upstairs to prepare. (English audio and subtitle)
11. LAPUTA : CASTLE IN THE SKY. Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta (1986) One night an airship travels though the clouds. On board are Sheeta, owner of the blue levitation stone, and Muska, the government agent who abducted her. Suddenly and without warning, Dola and her gang of air pirates attack the airship. Like Muska, they too want Sheeta and her stone. The pirates invade the ship, and during the ensuing chaos, Sheeta manages to knock Muska unconscious. The pirates break into Sheeta's room, and she tries to hide clinging to the outside of the ship. However, she loses her grip and falls into the night sky. (English subtitle)
12. Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies) (English Subtitles, 1988) September 9, 1945. A teenage boy, clad in rags, sags against a column in a train station. As passengers going past complain about the homeless in the station, Seita slumps over and dies. The janitors who remove his body find a rusted can, which they pitch into the grass outside. The can pops open, spilling its contents. As fireflies in the grass begin to fly away, the spirit of Seita’s younger sister Setsuko stands up. (English subtitle)
13. OCEAN WAVES. Umi ga Kikoeru aka I Can Hear The Sea (1993) A young man stands with a backpack hunched over his shoulder leans against a sign while waiting for his train. On the opposite platform across from him, he notices a girl making her way to the waiting line. Something about her makes him take notice, and he moves to his left in order to get a better view. A sudden gust of wind picks up her hair and she turns her head to smooth the wayward strands. But then the train zooms by obscuring both him and us of a clear of her face as she's about to turn toward the camera. (English subtitle)
14. PORCO ROSSO. Kurenai no buta (1992) Italian music is playing on an old-fashioned radio. The pig's face is covered with an open magazine as he relaxes on a beach by a lagoon. His seaplane, a Savoia S-2, is on the shore, and the small beach area is surrounded on all sides by high cliff walls. (English audio and English subtitle)
15. THE CAT'S RETURN: Based on Neko no Danshaku, Baron (literally "Baron, the Cat Baron") by Aoi HIIRAGI, the movie follows Muta (the fat cat in Whisper of the Heart) and Baron (also from Whisper) as they set out to rescue a young girl named Haru who has wandered into the world of cats. (English subtitle)
Neko is a fantasy adventure story directed by Hiroyuki MORITA, with music by Yuuji NOMI (who also composed the music for Whisper of the Heart), and a script by Reiko YOSHIDA. It was released in theaters in Japan with Ghiblies Episode II on July 19, 2002 by Toho. It was produced by Toshio SUZUKI with Hayao Miyazaki as the Executive Producer.
16. THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO: LUPIN THE THIRD Lupin, Jigen and Goemon pilfer a casino, only to discover their bounty is entirely counterfeit. In the hopes that they might obtain the printing plates for the legendary "Goat Bills," and avenge their failed plunder, they head for the microscopic nation of Cagliostro. After popping a tire, a beautiful girl in wedding garb careens past them in a small Citroen 2CV, followed by some men in black driving a daunting Hamber Supersnipe. Lupin, always tantalized by a pretty face, pulls a lever and begins high-speed pursuit in the small yellow Fiat. After a bit of gunplay, Lupin rescues the now-unconscious damsel in distress, only to get knocked out himself. The lovely young woman is captured by more pursuers, and Lupin ends up with her glove and a mysterious ring. Little things like these just bring back memories, don't they...? The Greater Boston Flute Association was organized in 1992 to present cultural and educational opportunities for flutists and other interested community members. Our goal is to provide such opportunities in ways and with concepts not usually found in New England. Past programs have included: a Flutes from around the world program which featured Irish, Shakuhachi, jazz, South American and Klezmer flutists from our area; an evening with Jean Pierre Rampal, where he played, reminisced and answered questions from the audience; and master classes with Julius Baker, Brooks Dewitters-Smith and the late Samuel Baron.

The Greater Boston Flute Association includes members from throughout New England, several other regions of the United States and abroad. We publish The Gazette quarterly (free to members) and host an annual Flute Fair where we present master classes on orchestral auditions, reading sessions for flute choirs, exhibits from local (and not so local) makers and much more.

The opening piano repeating pattern came out of improvisations on the tune Caravan by Juan Tizol with Infinite Trio at The Shore Bar in Leith, Edinburgh. I recieved a text message announcing the birth of Rocky & Pete's son, Miro (see pic) while driving home from work on the Thursday, on arriving home I immediately began work on this little 'Persian' piece.

It's a 2 year old device so I bartered with the guy in the Warehouse Stationary and got it for less than half-price.

The first way I used the PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) was using the Memo pad to make entries for myNZtrip blog while out on various adventures on my new bike.

Embedded in the Tungtsten W is a mobile phone and internet access and email via GPRS using the Orange SIM card. You can now email me direct to this Palm device. I can sync all my address book and iCal using iSync on my eMac and update my blog. Started a new blog called Tungsten Blog which is made on the PDA using hblogger.

Dear colleagues and friends, I am delighted to welcome you to another lecture in this series. Today, our subject is music.
“What's that got to do with the UN?”, you may be asking. My answer is that music has to do with everything.
From the first lullaby sung to us as newborn babies, music provides the “soundtrack” of our lives. So much so that I think many of us take it for granted – just as we do the soundtrack of a film, which we often hear without listening to it. That is, we enjoy the film without realising how much the music conditions our reaction.
Music penetrates almost every part of our lives: our rest, our entertainment, our education, and our worship.
Throughout history, it has celebrated the triumphs and tragedies of life. As Plato said, music “gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination”.
Music both shapes and reflects society. Dancers follow its beat; protesters use it to find their voice. It can promote ideals - like peace and solidarity – but it can also prepare armies for battle. It is part of almost every important personal and collective moment.
But it is also mysterious. Rhythm and pitch can be expressed as mathematical formulae; and musicians know the techniques by which they produce a certain sound. But no scientist or musician can explain the power that music has over our emotions. That, surely, is what another Greek writer had in mind, who said that song is a divine gift from God.
In a world of diversity where often values clash, music leaps across language barriers and unites people of quite different cultural backgrounds. And so, through music, all peoples can come together to make the world a more harmonious place.
You see, I am getting carried away I'd better stop – I'm not the one who's here to give the lecture. But luckily for you, you don't have to listen to me giving the lecture, that is not my plan. We have someone much better, much better qualified here with us to give that lecture - Professor Leon Botstein, who is President of Bard College and music director and principal conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra.
I won't say a word more and I hand you over to Leon.

Hello Flute List,
This is my first posting in which I wish to announce my composition Transit Of Venus for flute(s) and invite members to review and perform the piece(s).
While waiting for pupils to attend their lesson this May, I was doing the tonal exercise oscillating between open c sharp and the adjacent d and trying to even the tone colour difference between the two notes. To cut a long story short, by the time I got home that evening, I had the makings of a piece which has become Transit Of Venus.
First was Transit Of Venus, a study for flute, then a friend prompted me to write a flute duet version, Transit Of Venus 2. A week or so later I expanded this for 2 solo flutes and flute choir, Transit Of Venus 3.

I use the application Sibelius and have made the pieces available on my website. Downloads are in 4 forms:
1) Scorch (the Sibelius browser plugin which you can download via the links on the webpage),
2) MIDI - for playing on your soundcard,
3) MP3 - made from recording the output of my MIDI,
4) PDF for print.

There are no restrictions (to date) to downloading, so access is free although there is a PayPal DONATE button should you wish to make a contribution.
