About Your Municipal
Court
Fact – The revenue
for Municipal Court each year is not determined by the Judge. It is dependant
on the number of cases filed in the court each
year.
Fact – The Municipal
Court collects approximately two million dollars in fines and court costs each
year depending on the number of cases presented to the
court.
Fact – Since 2002
the number of cases presented in Municipal Court has been
decreasing:
2002 – 23, 289 cases
filed
2003 – 21,127 cases
filed
2004 – 16,936 cases
filed
2005 – estimated 15,600
cases
Fact – This
reduction in cases filed impacts the amount of revenue collected by the
Municipal Court.
Fact –
Judge Ballinger is addressing this issue by reducing her staff and not replacing
a position, which opened up due to a recent
retirement.
Fact - Judge
Ballinger has put in place a new program to collect fines and court costs, which
are past due. This program is currently bringing in approximately $1500 each
week. Some of these fees have been outstanding since
1996.
Fact – The Municipal
Court’s operating budget is approximately $700,000 this year. At the
current time it is projected that the court budget will end the year with an
approximate $10,000 carryover. This projection does not include the money,
which will be saved due to the reduction of staff outlined
above.
Fact – Judge
Ballinger runs a very efficient and effective court that is well within budget.
To imply otherwise for political gain is
unfair.
