Judge Teresa Ballinger of the Marion
County Municipal Court has recently signed an order to create the “Court
Assistance Fund” to serve the Municipal Court. Effective Monday April 11,
2005, Judge Ballinger’s Court Assistance Fund will pay for various
services to assist victims of crime. Victim advocate services will be financed
through this fund so as to bring consistent support and assistance to victims of
crime. This fund will also pay for the interpreters employed by the court due
to the increasing numbers of diverse individuals appearing before Judge
Ballinger. Judge Ballinger’s Court Assistance Fund will receive its
funding from the court costs paid in many of the cases. “I hope to
relieve the City and County of the burden of paying for these services by
requiring the individuals who committed the offense to pay the cost. In other
words, the defendant who is found guilty in a Domestic Violence case will be
assessed court costs which will in turn finance the assistance and support
services for the victim of this crime.” The Court Assistance Fund will
also supply the court with mediators to assist in the efficient resolution of
cases.
