Misc. Notes
Richard Walters "Dick" Rosser, is my great-uncle and elder brother of my grandmother Belle Rosser, from whom I heard many a story about him, especially his time away at the War. Dick represented Corowa as an Army cadet at the
coronation of King George V in 1911.
He worked at the Post Office in Corowa as a telegrapher, and then
went to Nimmitabel P.O. as Assistant Postmaster. Dick enlisted in
1914 while he was at Nimmitabel, and had to get permission from
his father as he was less than 21 years old. He was in the first
Australian Expeditionary Force.
Nan tells the story of when Dick came home before going off to
the War, and bringing bags of sweets for her and the other young
children. Dick embarked on 20 October 1914 from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides.
While Dick was on his way overseas, HMAS Sydney
sank The Emden. He was wounded at the landing at Gallipoli
and had his 21st birthday in Cairo while recovering from his
wounds.
He later went to Pozieres in France where he was killed; this battle was part of the Battle of the Somme. According to the Australian War Memorial site, he is buried at Villers-Bretonneux.
