Richard left home at an early age to go to sea. He went to California in the gold rush, made a lot of money, but was reportedly defrauded of it. In Australia he apparently went to Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie before settling in southern NSW/NE Victoria.

Richard married twice — his first wife (Georgina) died of pneumonia; Belle Rosser said that Richard always blamed her death on her having to bring the cows in while raining heavily, so he hated cows after that.

It was said that Lord Balfour reported to Richard's family in England that he thought he had seen Richard walking down the street in Australia, so it appears that Lord Balfour was on fairly close terms with the family. It is not clear how this information came back to Richard or his wife and children.

Death certificate states cause of death as "senility" (duration 2 years) and "exhaustion" (duration 1 week).
