(1) 1 John LISTON
-----------------------------------------------Spouse: Margaret McDOUGAL
Marr Date: 20 Feb 1807
Marr Place: Newhaven, North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Children: William (~1808-?)
Margaret (~1809-)
NOTES: According to the "Dictionary of Scottish History", there was a Liston barony in Mid and West Lothian, held by the Knights Hospitallers (also known as the Knights of St John of Jerusalem). The Knights Hospitallers had their headquarters in Scotland at Torphichen. This is confirmed in "The Surnames of Scotland" by George F. Black, in SLQ, where it is said that Liston is from the old barony of Liston, now included in the parish of Kirkliston.
Some relevant dates from Scottish history:
1783 - the government imposed a tax on every christening, marriage and burial entry recorded in church records. This probably led to many events going unrecorded.
1793 - the tax was repealed. Because many people had not been recorded in parish registers during the 10 year existence of the law, sometimes whole families were recorded afterwards.
1810 - the first power loom was used in Scotland, heralding increased building of factories.
(2) 1.1 William LISTON
-----------------------------------------------Birth Date: abt Jun 1808
Birth Place: North Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Death Date: ?
Occ: Shipís Pilot
NOTES:From Margaret Hogg, in letter of 9 November, 1994, received 15 November, 1994: "William Liston was a pilot on the Clyde, working from Ardrossan, and had come over from the East coast of Scotland ... he was christened in N. Leith on 14 June 1808 ..."
The following information is taken largely from the Dictionary of Scottish History. The land and harbour of Leith were granted to Holyrood Abbey by David I of Scotland. North Leith was held directly by the abbey. In 1636 it was made a burgh of barony with Edinburgh as superior (collecting all the income); in 1833 it was made an independent parliamentary burgh, and in 1920 it amalgamated with Edinburgh.
The term "Burgh of Barony" was first used about 1400. From the 12th Century, the King had authorised landholders to have burghs on their land - the burgh seems to be basically a local government area like a shire.
The burghs of barony proliferated from the 15th century onwards, usually with powers to hold markets and fairs for local trade, but not to infringe the Royal burghs' monopoly of foreign trade.

(Smout, T.C. Lifestyles in the lowlands of Scotland: Seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.)
1851 Scottish Census shows William as being present in the Ardrossan household with his mother and his siblings - David (17) Apprentice ship carpenter; Robert (12), Mary (9), James (8), and Robinson (6). William's occupation is shown as an apprentice baker.
Information from Jean Roberta Liston: "One of the Listons was a protege of the Duke of Hamilton; the Listons were a noted family in the Ardrossan area."
"An editor of 'The Ardrossan Herald' had researched the Liston family history and gone back 600 years." (This was apparently told to my grandmother Jean Liston by her brother Alec who was in the UK during WWII. He went to Ardrossan during this time and, I believe, spoke to the editor.)
"William Liston had a farm at Spring Hill nr Skipton. His children all had to go to work at 11 yrs of age - he was a very hard man. He left 500 pounds to each of his children."
NB: Birth date unclear - christened 20 Aug 1835.

LauderNOTES:Some information about Ardrossan from the Dictionary of Scottish History: The lands belonged to Fergus in the reign of Robert I (1274-1329). Ardrossan became a burgh of barony for 5 pound householders in 1846.
From the Bartholomew Gazetteer of Britain (First edition): " A port on the Firth of Clyde, 12 miles/20 km west of Kilmarnock. Passenger boat services to Arran and Northern Ireland."
Information from Jean Roberta Liston: "Agnes died young, in her 50s".
