Nap Time
Siestas are by no means the exclusive domain of
Latin Americans.
For the Chinese, lunch is always followed by "xiu
xi," a rather lengthy nap. This time is sacrosanct, so phoning someone between
1:00 and 2:30 in the afternoon would be as rude as calling at 3:00 in the
morning.
Recently I had lunch with two of
my grad students, Bi Yan and Zhu Xiaodan. As we finished, I said to them, "You
will take a nap now?" They said yes and politely inquired if I would be going
back to the faculty living quarter for my own nap. I told them I didn't nap.
They looked as shocked as if I'd said I didn't breathe
oxygen.
"But why not?" asked Bi
Yan.
"We can't take naps in America. We
have only an hour, or maybe even just a half hour, for lunch and then we have to
return to work."
Zhu Xiaodan said, " What
is the use of all that freedom if you can't even take a
nap?"
It does make you
wonder....
